Kansas Science Standard: 5-ESS2-1 — Earth's Systems
Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
Purpose of This Book
This book introduces readers to the water cycle and explains how water moves between Earth's surface and the atmosphere. Readers will learn about evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection. By following Wally's adventure, readers will discover how the Sun helps drive the water cycle and how water connects different parts of Earth's systems.

Hi! My name is Wally, and I am a tiny water droplet!
I live in a beautiful lake surrounded by trees, hills, and sunshine. I love splashing around with my water droplet friends.
One morning, I wondered what the world looked like beyond my lake. Could I visit the clouds? Could I travel through the sky?
I was about to discover something amazing. I was going on an adventure through the water cycle!
One warm, sunny day, the Sun shone brightly on my lake.
The Sun's energy warmed the water. Some of the liquid water changed into an invisible gas called water vapor.
I was now traveling upward into the air!
This process is called evaporation. It happens when liquid water gains enough energy to become water vapor.
"Wow!" I thought. "My adventure has just begun!"
Higher and higher I traveled!
As water vapor, I moved through the air. I could not see myself because water vapor is an invisible gas.
The air higher in the sky was cooler than the warm lake below.
As I cooled, I changed back into a tiny liquid water droplet. Soon, I joined many other tiny droplets floating together.
We were becoming a cloud!
I had discovered the next stage of the water cycle.
Inside the cloud, I met thousands of tiny water droplets.
"How did we get here?" I asked.
A little droplet explained, "When water vapor cools, it changes into tiny liquid water droplets. This is called condensation!"
Now I understood how clouds form. Clouds contain tiny liquid water droplets or ice crystals.
We floated through the sky together, waiting to see where the wind would take us next.
What an amazing adventure!
