The African elephant lives in Africa.They range throughout sub-Saharan Africa
and the rain forests of central and West Africa.

Baby elephants, also known as calves can weigh up to 230 pounds
when they are born.

Similar to humans, elephants are very social and curious animals.

Dd is for domesticated
Compared to other elephants, African Elephants are not easily domesticated.

Elephants use their ears to regulate theirtemperature. Their ears keep them cool in
the hot climates of Africa.

Ff is for feet
Elephants can hear warnings from other elephants through their feet.

Gg is for group
A group of elephants is called a herd. A herd consist of about ten elephants.

Hh is for herbivores
African elephants are herbivores, meaningthey don't eat meat. They feed on plants and fruits.

Elephants are very intelligent animals.They have a problem-solving ability, they can paint, and
even play basketball.

African elephants cannot jump because they are too heavy. They can stand on their hind legs.

Elephants are considered to be part of keystone species, which are species that other animals are dependent on.

African Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth. Compare to land mammals, they also have the largest brains.

Mm is for matriarch
The matriarch, or the older female leader leadsthe herd and is the one in charge.

African elephants make loud noisesthat sound like a trumpet.

The average African elephantlives to be seventy years old.

Elephants are poached for their tusk.Many countries have banned the trade of ivory to
reduce the amount of elephants being poached.

Elephants walk very quietly becausethey have a cushion under their feet that muffles sounds.

Rr is for relative
One of the African elephants closest relative is the Asian elephant. They have very noticeable difference.

Ss is for sleep
African elephants sleep for only a few hours a day. They spend most of their day looking for food.
