Did you know the blue is the largest animal in the world?
Blue whales are the largest animals to have
ever lived on Earth. Blue whales live in every
ocean around the world. They sometimes travel
in small groups but usually travel alone or in
pairs. Blue whales feed in the Arctic waters
in the summer and migrate toward the Equator
when winter comes. Unlike most other
whales who travel non-stop while migrating;
blue whales may stop for long periods of time
if they come across a good feeding ground. In
all blue whales can migrate for up to 4 months
and up to 3500 miles depending on where they
are traveling to and from.

An interesting fact about blue whales is
that they do not have teeth. Blue whales have
fringed plates of a finger-nail like material
called baleen. They feed by taking in large
gulps of water and the baleen acts as a net and
catches the tiny shrimp like animals called
Krill; that they eat. Blue whales can eat
about 4 tons of krill a day. The blue whale can
reach up to 100 feet long and up to 200 tons in
weight, by feeding almost solely on these
shrimp-like animals.

Blue whales look true blue underwater.
Where in actuality the tops of their bodies are
a grayish-blue color, and their underbellies are
a yellowish hue. This yellowish hue comes
from the millions of micro organism that
live in their skin. I think it is neat that the
blue whale is like a traveling house. Blue
whales have a broad flat head with a long
tempered body that ends in triangular fins.
Blue whales are not just the biggest animal
on Earth they are also the loudest. They can
swim anywhere from 5 to 20 miles an hour,
although their average speed is about 14 miles
per hour.

Blue whales babies are called calves.
They are among some of the biggest creatures
on the planet when they are born. blue whales
calves spend about one year in their mother's
bellies. Calves are about 25 feet long and
weight about 3 tons when they are born. Blue
whale calve drink 150 gallons of milk a day
for the first year of their lives. The average
life span of a blue whale is about 80 to 90
years old. An interesting fact is that the
oldest living blue whale was determined to be
around 110 years old.
