There was once a very evil and jealous women named Sassouma. She
banished Sogolon and Sundiata from her palace because Sundiata was
predicted to be a great ruler.

Sassouma would constantly criticize Sogolon and her son
because Sundiata was not able to walk.

Sogolon was angry that her son could not walk, and she
was tired of being made fun at because of her son. She
began to cry in frustration

Sundiata was concerned about his mother and asked her
what was wrong. She told him that she wished he could
walk and bring her baobab leaves just as the other kids
did for their mothers

Sundiata told his mother that he would learn how to walk.
He asked his mother if she wanted the whole baobab tree
or just the leaves. She told him she wanted the tree,
standing tall, and proud in front of her hut.

Balla Fasseke tells Sundiatas, fathers smiths to build him
an iron rod that was sturdy enough, strong enough, and
heavy enough that he could lean on it and it would help
him walk again.

The day came, when Sundiata would walk for the first
time. "Today is a day like no other, but it will see what no
other day has seen." Sundiata exclaimed (524).

Sundiata was handed the iron rod. It made such a loud
sound that is startled Sassouma and got her attention.

Slowly, Sundiata got on his feet, using the iron rod as a
cane, and began to walk.

"Oh day, what a beautiful day,
Oh day, day of joy;
Allah Almighty, you never created a
finer day.
So my son is going to walk!" said Sogolon
proudly.

Sogolon was extremely excited and proud of her son and
as she expressed her happiness, she helped clear her
sons path, so he could accomplish his goal.

And when Sundiata got to the tree, he pulled it from the
ground, carried it on his shoulders, and placed it in front
of his mothers hut.

His mother would see the tree everyday and admired her
sons courage and determination.

Overtime, Sundiata became good at hunting and a great
leader. Soumaoro, the sorcerer and King of Sosso, exiled
him from to the Kingdom of Mema and he became more
powerful and conquered many other kingdoms.
