Jenny and Nathan were best friends. Every night
after dinner, they would play outside until bed
time. One night, after catching fireflies, the two
laid down in the grass and looked at the sky.

Isn't the Moon supposed to be a circle? Why
isn't it a circle
tonight?
Maybe we're seeing another Moon
Soon, the two were called inside to get ready for bed

As she was getting ready for bed, Jenny asked her mom how
many moons were in the sky and what shapes they made.
Jenny’s mom explained that
there was only one moon.
She said maybe they could
figure out all of the shapes
themselves. Jenny’s mom
helped Jenny print out a
calendar so Jenny could
keep track of the shape of
the Moon every night for an
entire month! Every night
before Jenny went out to
play with Nathan, she would
use an Oreo to record in her
calendar what the Moon
looked like.

This is the calendar
they made

One night, after Jenny put her Oreo onto her moon
calendar, she went outside to find Nathan talking
to a strange creature in the yard.

"You're from space!" Jenny exclaimed as she ran up to the
alien. Jenny started to ask the alien all of her questions
about the Moon.
Overwhelmed with questions, the alien decided that it was
best to give Jenny a better look for herself to see what was
really happening in Space.

The Moon was running
around the Earth. He
realized that where the
Moon was in its path
would change what

Nathan noticed that the

the Earth saw.

The shapes we see, also called phases of the Moon, are
created by light reflected from the Sun. The part of the Moon
facing the Sun stays lit, and the part not facing the Sun stays
dark.”
“That’s right!” said the alien. “The Moon travels
in an orbit around the Earth, moving near and far
from the Sun.

“That’s kind of like a flashlight shining on a ball!” Jenny
noticed. “Wherever you shine the light is where you can see
the ball. Wherever you don’t shine the light stays dark."
“Exactly!” said the alien. “Each position the Moon is in has a
name, too…"
