They loved to spend time
together and enjoyed cooking
up many delicious foods!
One sunday afternoon, mom
and son were in the kitchen
baking a cake for their
friend's upcoming birthday.

All alone, Baxter felt left out for
not being included in the cooking
fun. He was not allowed to go
in the kitchen.
"This stinks!" thought Baxter. "I
never get to have any fun. I am
always just stuck in this room!".

"I don't want to be in this room anymore!
I want to be free." thought Baxter.
And before his family
could catch him, Baxter
gathered his courage
and bolted out the front
door!

"Baxter, No!"
"Please, come back!"

"Who needs a family? Out here I can
do anything I want!" exclaimed
Baxter.
He could feel the wind beneath his
ears and the smell of spring flowers
all around him.
This, he thought, was freedom.

As Baxter wandered around, he heard a loud
noise he hadn't heard before. "Yikes! What
is that sound?" Startled and afraid, Baxter
ended up in a big city that was filled with
buildings, cars, and people.

Roaming the city in awe, Baxter found a stray
cat searching for a rat behind the trashcan.
"What is she doing near the trashcan?" Baxter
thought as he observed the cat.

In curiosity, Baxter asked the cat, "Why are
you searching for food in trashcans?
Buttercup then answered, "This is the only
way I can live since I do not have a family
to provide food."

"What is a family?" Baxter wondered,
pondering Buttercup's last words. Then
suddenly, Baxter was startled when a rat
came upon him out of the trashcan.

"Thanks" replied the rat. "You really saved
me back there, buddy." Cyrus then
proceeded to discuss how great life is in
the world outside home.

"I agree, so far I love being
free and in the outdoors, but
I am extremely hungry and
haven't eaten since I left
home," said Baxter.
Give me your collar, and I'll sell it to buy you food.

Muahaha! I can't believe that silly dog believed me!
Now he will be lost, like all of us who live in the streets.

...but Cyrus never showed up.

Maybe I do have a family whom I miss dearly.
Baxter searches the streets for food,
but is splashed by dirty, cold sewage
water. He begins to realize how
much he misses home.
