The two twins, Marie and Jewel, lived in
Oregon. The crops were doing well and all was
well. They completed the Oregon trail. But, now
they had another problem.
"Guess what?" asked the twin's dad, John.
"What is it?" asked the twins in unison.
The twins loved surprises. But this one,
was not a good one for them.
"We're moving to California!"

They all went inside to talk it over.
"In California, someone struck gold. Us
Golds, (for that was their last name) always
accept challenges. We can do it!" Their father
was so excited.
"What if we don't strike gold?" asked
Marie.
"We're leaving tomorrow and we will get
gold. For you are my Gold. Literally."

It was a bright and sunny Saturday. A
perfect time to start the trail. The twins already
washed and ate. Their dad and mom got the
wagon ready and the twins would ride the
family horses.

Weeks later, they made camp and their
horses ran away. The twins would now have to
walk alongside the trail. It was a sad time
indeed.

Their father bought a home from a nice
woman named, Lucy. Lucy was now their
neighbor because she liked them so much she
built a house next to them.
Their dad had started looking for gold and
their mom got a job as a baker. Sometimes she
brought leftovers from work to them. They still
were very poor though. Lucy usually took care
of them. They played outside with her and
helped her make jewelry. Jewel especially liked
it.

Water was very scarce. Sometimes, Lucy
and the twins would spend hours looking for
some water. It was horrible!
The twins sat down under a tree and
thought.
"I HAVE AN IDEA!" Jewel yelled.
"What is it?"
"Let's make jewelry and sell it. We will earn
lots of money. Isn't it a great idea? I mean, it's
full proof!"
"That's a great idea," said Marie with a
sigh.

Now, you're probably wondering why Marie
sighed. She did it because jewelry making was
Jewel's thing. Marie was not fond of it. Jewel
had creative ideas! Like, she made a lamp that
looked like magic. Marie made a crown. Marie
also felt guilty because it was fake gold and
they spent a lot of money just buying the
supplies.
