Preface:The endangered Puerto Rican crested toad
(peltophryne lemur),like many amphibians
world wide , is in critical danger of extinction.
These toads are unigue and easily identified
by their tumed up snout and bony head crest
and include habitat o the toad (Anaxyrus
marinus).Frogs and toads belong to the order
Anura (meaning "without a tail", since most
have no tail in their adult form). They also
have a very short backbone.

COMMON NAME:The common name is crested
toad

How does the crested toad moves ?Although shorter and less strong, the
toad's front legs act as shock
absorbers when landing.Toads that
prefer living in water have webbed
feet for paddling while the webbing
on a tree.

CIRCULATION:
A true body cavity ( coelom ) is found in Annelids and all
other higher animals. Hence they need the circulatory
system for the exchange of nutrients, metabolic wastes
and respiratory gases between the digestive tract and
the body wall. The circulatory system can be divided into
(1) a blood circulatory system and (2) lymph circulatory
(lymphatic) system. The blood circulatory system
includes the circulating fluid - the blood, the pathway of
circulation - the arteries, veins and blood capillaries and
the central pumping organ - the heart. And its cold
blooded by

SCIENTIFIC NAME:The scientific name its (Peltophryne
lemur).

HABITAT:Crested toads live in low lying areas
with rocky crevices or well-drained
soil. The toad also lives near bodies
of water,a long rock
outcrops,ponds,and vegetated
islands just off the shore. It can also
be found in semi-arid climates.

How does a toad catch its own food ?The toad catches insects and other Small food
animals on the sticky tip of its long tongue. For
example a fly or cricket passes within reach, the
toad quickly grabs the insect with his tongue. The
insect is caught on the sticky tip.Just as quickly
the toad flips its tongue back into its mouth. And
he does it like other toads.

How do toads excrete waste ?The toad excrete waste by doing almost the same process we
do when we swallow food and that process its called
digestion. But the toads get rid of their wastes
so they first the secretion of solid waste by a frog is the final
byproduct of its digestive process. Most frog species have
weak teeth and jaw structures that don't allow for effective
chewing. Most of what is swallowed by a frog is first broken
down in the stomach by muscular forces and the introduction
of digestive enzymes. It then moves to the small intestine,
where bile and pancreatic juices break the food down further
and allow nutrients to be absorbed into the frog's body. Then
it moves to the large intestine for the removal of excess
water. Finally, it moves through the colon to the cloaca for
evacuation.
.

The liquid excreted by a toad
consists of water combined with
ammonia urea or acid Nitrogenous
substances are filtered from the
toad's blood by its renal system ,
consisting of two kidneys. The waste
is channeled through ureters to the
urinary bladder where it is amassed
and then vented to the as ammonia
, and excrete this as urea .

ADAPTATIONS:The Puerto Rican crested toad is
nocturnal or active during nights.It
escapes the sun's intense heat
during the day by hidding in holes
within the limestone outcrops where
it lives.

ENEMIES:Animals that can eat toads for snacks
includes:snakes,lizards,birds,and
various small animals like
hedgehogs.Even underwater frogs
can't be safe from hungry sharp
toothed fish,water shrews and even
diving birds.

DISTRIBUTION:Puerto Rico (Guanica forest) on the
south coast; Thia ia the only native
species of toad found in Puerto Rico.
Captive bred toads have been
introduced to the south in Coamo,
and near Arecibo in the north.
