About the author:Jebediah the universal indicator is used in labs across the world.
Jebediah does not reveal his composition due to patent laws.
He is also not named Jebediah or from the south.
He is also a soulless chemical solution. Sorry kids.
Man, RAFTing is so much fun.

Howdy, kids! It’s Jeb-o-diah, the
universal indicator! I’m here to tell y’all
‘bout them colors a’ the pH rainbow.

For starters, how many a’y’all know
about that pH?
Welp, I’ll tell ya’ then.

Ever heard of an acid? Them narsty chemicals that burn ya. Them kind of molecular miscreants
been causin’ trouble since I was just a little feller.

I'll burn ya' mate.

We can tell if one of ‘em is an acid by
somethin’ called
potential for Hydrogen.
That’s where we get the
little name pH.

Unlock your true potential.

Now potential for hydrogen means we gotta
look real close at one of them acids, or
their brothers, the bases, and I aint talkin
baseball, neither.

He's mad becausehe can't play
baseball. And he has
really bad
hat hair. Yeah.

So these acids have what we call a formula.
Think of it like a secret code so your maw
and paw don’t know what you’re sayin’.

I don't need a secret code,my parents just don't
understand. OH-.

Well when we look real close
at their formula we see some
special little chemical doohickeys.

Oh my...

When they has an H+, they’s an acid. When
they has an OH-, they’s one a’ them bases.

H+a, ha.
OH-, you think I'm basic huh?

But my job is tell scientists (I call ‘em
nerds) how strong them chemicals are.

MwaH+ahahaha!

So them scientists want to know how
strong a chemical is. Well, I just take a
dive into that narsty slop, called a
solution, and tell ‘em.

Today I feel purple.

But it aint quite like that, see. We play a
game. I turn a fun little color in the
chemical and they says “Jeb-o-diah’s tellin’
us it’s a base.”

I change color cause I got my own
formula too. ‘Cept I don’t use it
‘gainst ma maw and paw (I love my
folks).

We're all unique!
My formula says what I’m shaped like real
close. And when I see some a’ them acids
or bases my shape changes a little.
