In the first chapter, Ponyboy is introduced as 

the narrator of the novel and begins to tell the 

story of how he was confronted by a group of 

Socs. He then describes the rival of the two 

gangs. The Socs are the upper class and more 

privileged gang and the Greasers are poorer 

than the middle class and are wilder too. 

Ponyboy then tells about the other members 

of the Greaser gang, including his brothers. 

The next night, Ponyboy and Johnny meet Dally 

at a drive-in movie theater. They end up sitting 

behind two Soc girls and Dally begins to 

aggravate them due to his remarks. Dally then 

goes off to buy some Cokes. Meanwhile, 

Ponyboy is talking to one of the girls, Cherry 

Valance. When Dally comes back he does not 

listen to Cherry when she tells him to stop 

bothering her and he is stunned after Johnny 

tells him to stop. Cherry soon realizes that 

Ponyboy and Johnny are not like the other 

Greasers. 

Two-Bit comes along and Ponyboy and Johnny 

offer to take the two girls home. As they are 

walking and talking, a blue mustang comes by 

with Cherry's boyfriend Bob in it. The Socs 

threaten Pony, Johnny, and Two-Bit. Cherry is 

not a fan of fighting so she tells Bob she will get 

in the car with them if he stops. Eventually, 

Ponyboy gets home and it is extremely late and 

Darry is furious and slaps Pony without 

meaning it. Ponyboy then runs out and goes to 

the park with Johnny.

While at the park, the same blue mustang and 

the Socs came by looking for a fight. One of 

them grabs Pony and shoves his head under a 

fountain. To prevent his friend from being 

drowned, Johnny uses a switchblade and kills 

Bob. Ponyboy wakes up and sees the dead Soc 

and they decide to go to Dally for help. Dally 

gives them money and tells them to get on a 

train to the next town and hide in an old 

church. 

Ponyboy wakes up in the church and sees a 

note that Johnny has gone to get food and 

supplies. They each cut their hair and Johnny 

bleaches Pony's hair. For a few days they eat 

bolonga and read Gone With the Wind. Dally 

comes and brings news. He tells them the the 

two gangs are planning on having a big fight 

and he also brings a letter from Sodapop to 

Ponyboy. Dally then takes them to a local Dairy 

Queen so they can get something to eat.

Johnny begins to say how he wants to go back 

and turn himself in to the police but he notices 

the church is on fire. Him and Ponyboy get out of 

the car and run to see the church. Johnny and 

Ponyboy go inside the burning building to save a 

group of kids. Johnny gets hit with a piece of 

timber and Dally has to drag him out. They each 

go to the hospital and are known as heroes. 

Darry and Sodapop meet Pony in the hospital and 

Ponyboy realizes how much Darry loves him. 

Meanwhile, Dally will be okay, but Johnny is in 

serious condition.
