Leila was a 12 year old Muslim girl excited for
her first day of school. She had just started
wearing the hijab recently, and she was both
excited and shy to wear it to school for the first
time.
"Now don't be too nervous, Leila. Remember
this is your decision." her mother reminded her
as Leila walked out the door.
Leila smiled and kissed her mom quickly,
hiding her nervous feelings. She picked up her
new school bag and began the
5 minute walk that would bring her to
Ridgewood Public school.
As Leila walked, she felt the nervous excitement
normal
to anyone who would be seeing their friends
again after
2 months. She had been in Egypt visiting her
extended
family for most of the summer.
Soon Leila found herself close to the
gates of her school. She
saw children playing and talking to
each other with first day excitement.
The sun shined brightly and Leila
swallowed nervously.
It seemed as if the pink scarf that
seemed lovely at
home had turned a bit too bright.
Suddenly she noticed how she stood out
compared
to all of her friends. She noticed how different
she looked in comparison
to all the smiling students in the yard. She
thought of her family back in
Egypt and desperately wished she was back
where people looked like her.
But just when Leila thought she was
too shy to step in, a girl poked her
on the shoulder. She turned around to
see a girl with dark curly hair
looking
at her with concern. The girl had a
dark complexion and a wide smile.
"Is everything okay?" The girl asked.
"I've noticed you were standing here
for
a while. Did you forget your lunch?"
"No," Leila said quietly. "I was just thinking."
"Well wanna walk in together? I have first day
jitters & your scarf
is a super cool colour. I wish I had thought of
wearing such a nice
colour on the first day."
Leila smiled and stuck her hand out.
"My name is Leila, what's yours?" she
asked, her
confidence increasing with every word.
"Paige!" the girl replied. "I just
moved here from Calgary."
As Paige chattered on about her flight
and experience moving to Kingston,
Leila smiled
to herself. Just when she thought she
wouldn't fit in, her unique feature had
drawn
her a new friend.
