The Princess and the inventive Young Man

Once upon a time there was an old fisherman who lived
with his son. Every day he went fishing and then he sold
the fish in order to earn a living. One day, he caught a
goldfish and brought it home. When his son saw it he
said:
• Father, I will sell the goldfish and earn much
money!
The fisherman did not agree but his son’s persistence
pursued him. So the young man took the goldfish
outside the palace to sell it.
• Goldfish for saleeeeeeeeee!!! I have got a
goldfish for saleeeeeee!!!!

The Princess and her companions heard him and invited the
young man in the palace’s kitchen. They loved the goldfish
and wanted to buy it.
• Tell us, young man, how much does your goldfish
worth??
• I do not want money, he replied.
• Then we can give you food, clothes or whatever you
ask for.
• I just want the Princess to show me the mark on her
leg.
• And how do you know about my marks? , asked the
Princess.
Your Highness, my grandmother was a midwife and she
helped your mother in your birth.

When I was a young boy she kept telling what a beautiful
baby you were and about your tiny marks.
The young woman, shy enough, raised her skirt and showed
him the small mark on her ankle. Then the young man gave her
the goldfish and took his way back. He torn his clothes and
when he saw his father he told him:
• I am sorry father… Somebody attacked me and took
the goldfish away.
The father, though sorrowful, tried to give comfort to his
son:
• It does not matter… Tomorrow I will bring fish so we
can eat.
The next day, the fisherman caught a bigger goldfish and his
son asked him again to give it to him so he could sell it.

• But my son, I am afraid that they will attack you again
and then we will have no bread to eat…
• No father! This time I will make it! You will see!
The old man had no option but leave his child as he wished. The
poor man went again outside the palace to sell the goldfish.
• I have got a goldfish for saleeeeeeeeee! Anybody???
The Princess and her companions brought him once again into the
kitchen. They got really enthusiast with the goldfish and asked
to buy it.
• What do you want to give you? , they asked.
• I want nothing more than the Princess show me her
second mark!
The Princess denied but the young man insisted that he would
not give the fish even in exchange for all the goods of the world.
