Once upon a time, there lived a dugong
named Owen in the Great Barrier Reef.
One day Owen’s family told him some
very bad news, that the Reef was in
danger and that there home was going
to be destroyed to make way for the
coal and ships that were coming from
overseas. Owen couldn't deal with this
news and had to do something to save
all his fishy friends and the coral plants
in the reef.

Owen got a group of his friends
to campaign AGAINST
dredging the Great Barrier
Reef. Owen and his friends
spent every second of the day
trying to create a campaign
and get as many of the marine
life on their side!

A loud noise was disturbing Owen and
all his friends, so Owen went up to
shore. He took a peek to look up at the
shore, what Owen saw was terrifying!
There was a big digger digging the
ground of the Great Barrier Reef and
dumping it right on top of all the coral.

Owen realized that the coral needed
sun to keep itself alive because it is a
living organism just like us. He needed
to do something straight away. That
night Owen thought, thought and
thought about what he could do to help.
The next day Owen went back up to the
shore before they started dredging and
saw a boy at the shore all alone.

Owen approached the young boy at the
shore.
“Hi little dugong,” the boy said.
“Hello, young boy what’s your name?”
Owen replied.
“Peeta, my name is Peeta!”
“My name is Owen and I have a
question for you. Do you know what is
going on?” Owen asked.
”Yes” Peeta replied. “My dad is the
contracter and I’m not happy with him,
no matter what I do nothing will
change his mind!”

............

Owen thought for a second before
replying with “we need to do something
I’m one of the endangered species as
well as turtles, whales and all the coral
that will be destroyed. I don’t want to
see my home ruined and all my friends
in danger, we wouldn’t do it to your
home, so why do it to our home?”
Owen responded with a sad look on his
face.

Peeta had an idea to tell the
community what is happening and to
help campaign AGAINST dredging the
Great Barrier Reef. Peeta’s idea was a
hit. He got a group of 27 people to help
fight against this issue! Owen got all of
his fishy friends and together they
worked at the shore to make a plan.
