As Sally closed the car door and got ready to
head into school, she hear her mom yell out
the window.
“Sally, don’t forget about your appointment
after school!”
“I know, mom” Sally yelled back sullenly.
Last week Sally’s mom made her an
appointment with the school counselor, Ms.
Bernstein.
As Sally closed the car door and got ready to
head into school, she hear her mom yell out
the window.
“Sally, don’t forget about your appointment
after school!”
“I know, mom” Sally yelled back sullenly.
Last week Sally’s mom made her an
appointment with the school counselor, Ms.
Bernstein.

Throughout the school day Sally couldn’t help but feel
distracted, her thoughts completely encompassed by her
upcoming appointment with the school counselor.
Even though Sally had met Ms. Bernstein several times
and found her to be quite friendly, the idea of being sent
to counseling filled Sally with anxiety.
Though the hours passed slowly, eventually the school
day came to an end. Sally then sighed, mustered up all
her courage, and headed over to Ms. Bernstein’s office.

In all of Sally’s nervousness she completely forgot her
manners and opened the door to Ms. Bernstein’s door
without knocking. Sally was confused by the sight she found
— the school counselor sitting on a mat on the floor.
“Oh, Sally, forgive me! I got so wrapped up in my yoga
that I lost track of the time” Ms. Bernstein apologized.
“It’s okay, but what’s yoga?” asked Sally.
“Yoga is an Indian practice that combines different
positions, breathing patterns, and inner personal
meditation. It has tons of benefits like improving your
posture, building up your flexibility, increasing muscle
strength, and giving you peace of mind” explained Ms.
Bernstein.

“You seem a little nervous” Ms. Bernstein observed.
“Yeah, I guess I am a bit” Sally admitted.
“Actually I know a yoga pose that could help with that. Would
you like to try?” offered Ms. Bernstein.
Sally shyly nodded her head, “I guess I can give it a shot."
“This position is called 'salutation seal'. It can help to alleviate
stress and make you feel more relaxed. For this pose you first sit
down criss-cross applesauce. Then you breathe in while bringing
your hands together and straightening your back, then all that’s
left to do is close your eyes” Ms. Bernstein explained while
demonstrating. “Now you try!”

Sally got down on the floor and followed Ms. Bernstein’s
directions. “Like this?” asked Sally.
“Yes, just like that.” Ms. Bernstein confirmed. “Now
hold that pose and take some deep breaths.”
Sally did as she was told and after a few moments she
almost forgot where she was.
“Do you feel a bit calmer?”
“Actually, I do!” Sally smiled.

“Alright Sally, now that you’re feeling more relaxed, let’s get to why
you’re here. Your mother told me you haven’t been doing your homework.
Can you explain to me what’s going on?” asked Ms. Bernstein.
“It’s not that I’m a bad kid or am trying to misbehave,” Sally began,
“It’s just that whenever I sit down to do my homework I can never seem to
concentrate!”
“Actually, I think another yoga position might be able to help solve your
problem! The ‘tree pose’ has been known to help people focus. You begin
by standing up straight, then you raise your right leg and rest your foot
just below your left knee. Then you want to bring your palms together in
front of you and raise them above your head. Next you should position
your hands back in front of you and lower your leg. After you’ve finished
you then repeat the same steps with your other leg” Ms. Bernstein
explained while demonstrating. “Try doing the Tree Pose just before you
begin your homework next time and see if that helps” she smiled.
