Why they came.John was only 9 when his family had decided to travel to the "new world". They decided to go because his father wanted more opportunities, with
the growing population there just wasn't enough room.John's dad was also
a farmer and with the poor soil in Europe the only option was the fertile lands
of America. America also offered freedom from a monarchical government,
economic opportunities, and spacious lands. It seemed that America was their
only answer, but John didn't want to leave. He wanted to stay, so he told his dad.

2

Preparation to leave.John's dad said that there would be much opportunities for John their as well, he felt a littlebetter and so he started packing. He packed his favorite clothes, food, and his special teddy.
John's dad said his whole entire family were to be coming with him to the new world so on
the boat he could reconnect with his family. The only real downside is that John's friends
had to stay behind because their families were doing well off.

3

Journey to AmericaJohn got sea sick, but his family helped him through it and gave him medicine. The trip wasn't too bad, it was a bit crowded, but his dad
let him onto his shoulders as they approached Ellis Island. John's
dad said its where everyone who came from Europe went through to
get to America. There he saw the Statue of Liberty, and entered into
it. All of his family made it through the check out, but he saw sick
people and others crying to try and get through. John felt lucky.

4

Where did they settle?John's dad had gotten some land near the south of America so hecould do his farming. As the legends told there were fertile lands,
so John's dad could plant everything and anything, their family
was saved due to America.

5

How were they treatedAfter settling in for a few months, John's dad had enough money to start having trips to the big city. Everyone was so friendly, and were
selling gadgets left and right. No one told them a bad thing, it were
as if they had belonged their. John and his family had quickly adapted
to the American lifestyle since it was similar to the one back home.

6

Trials and ErrorsIt wasn't always easy for John's dad to sell his crops at first, the soil was very different fromthe one in Europe, but they went around and asked for advice. Also, there was a lot of crops
being sold so John's dad had to come up with some that were seasonal, such as pumpkins,
watermelons and berries. More trouble was that there were a lot of people coming through
his land so they had to buy barbed wire so no one could come through and destroy his crops.

7

How did they stayThey knew that America was a dream and they also knew that it wouldn't be easy at first. It was going to be a work in progress,
but the entire family knew that it was well worth the move. There
was way more open space, there was economic opportunities and
the land was so fertile they became rich. That made John happy

8

What did they contributeIn the early 1800's old immigrants provided the basis for our economy, many of them founded huge corporations that still exist today. Some immigrants also were entrepreneurs,
finding knew inventions in old things and then selling it for their own profit. John's family
in specific was a farmer type of entrepreneur. They planted seasonal crops and sold them
for high profit for their rareness during the season, because they would preserve the crops.
