Iliya Muromets is the most popular epic hero, the only of Russian heroes who was
canonized.
It is known from ancient epics that Iliya was born in Karacharovo. But the life of this hero
developed so, that he performed his military exploits far from his home during the service
to the Kiev Prince.
With the name of the epic Russian hero Gushchins’ house in Priokskaya Street is
connected. In 2000 a memorial table was opened on this house. People say that Iliya
Muromets lived in this house.
People can admire of a huge tree-stump from "epic" oak tree in the yard of the Murom
Museum. According to the legend Ilya Muromets pulled out such oak trees by the roots
and threw them into the Oka and changed a bed of the river.
The image of Iliya Muromets is an embodiment of the best features of the Russian people.
Great physical strength was matched with greater inner strength of spirit, the desire to
protect and defend the Russian land.
