Mother went to the market yesterday, and brought back a ton of
food, and spent almost all of our money on food. Mother and Grandma Alice
had made up their minds, we aren’t leaving the house. We did everything
we could to protect ourselves and stay inside.. The windows were boarded
up, the red cross on the door was showing wear from weeks worth of being
there. I never really noticed the cross until Mother wanted help with the
groceries, and she opened the door up, arms wide with bags. Tons of paper
brown bags lined the pavement outside. There was enough food to feed five
hungry men for a year. I knew we would manage. Now everyday there was
a routine. We woke up and rang the bell around the house. We ate
breakfast. We prayed, and watered the many posies we had around our
house. We ate lunch. We rang the bell. We ate dinner. We rang the bell and
prayed. The sounds of bells were continuous like a constant song that kept
repeating, and repeating, and repeating…… I was getting sick of it. But
whatever helps us, helps us, and all I can do is help. With mother’s soothing
appearance and Grandma Alice’s hopeful words, I know we can’t get sick.
We can’t, I hope.

It seems there is not a lot of people getting sick anymore. The
priest, Father Antonio let us be aware that it was now deemed safe to go
outside. More and more people were returning to the market. More and more
people were shouting out their great bargains and products. We were
somewhat poor, what with having no work for two years and spending
almost all of our money on food to stay inside. But our first day in the
market was most excrutiating. We had tea and fresh produce. But in the
midst of it all, we saw Anna. I sprinted to her like a racehorse with open
arms. Our embrace lasted five minutes, and then Anna broke down. She was
bawling her eyes out. I felt so bad, I joined her in crying. She reached inside
her coat pocket and pulled out a bracelet made of the most beautiful beads
in the market. Hannah explained that when Hannah got sick, she insisted in
spending her money on these gorgeous beads. They cost a lot, but she didn’t
care. She had made it 3 days before her death, and a little note came with
the bracelet. It read: For Sofia~ The bestest friend I could ever ask for.
~Hannah. A little heart was found on the bottom. I put the bracelet on, and I
knew then that I would never take it off.
