Rodolfo (Corky) Gonzalez was a 

Mexican American who was a 

political activist.

In addition to being an 

accomplished poet, 

González was also a 

boxer!

González realized that Mexican 

Americans were being treated 

unfairly and marginalized in 

American society.  

One of the ways he decided to act out 

against this marginalization of his 

people was to pen the poem "I Am 

Joaquin," in which he discusses the 

history of Mexican ancestry and 

champions the future of Mexican 

Americans
