Introduction
The amazing beauty of the sun rising was just
unfolding as I was landing my helicopter in a soil
filled area with few vines and trees in the Amazon
Rain forest. My brother, Eric O’Neill came with me
because he wanted to see a jaguar for his 7th
grade science report. He is only 11 and supposed
to be in 5th grade. I am Skylar O’Neill, and one
thing I love is Nature!! My best friend Samantha
Marshall, also came with me because A: We do
everything together and B: I needed someone to
come with me except for my brother.

(Reason C is mainly why Samantha came
here!)Our goal was to find a gem called the Amazon
Stone. The gem is very rare and if we find it we will
get extra credit in college. Since Samantha and I
are 17, we are already in college and decided to
find the gem to impress our Yale professors. Oh!
Did I mention we both are in Yale? I can’t even
believe it! I can’t wait until we find that stone in an
ecosystem full of trees and vines which create a
very lush jungle. The rain forest is also packed with
over 50% of the world’s species. The rain forest is
so beautiful. I thought.

Attack
After 30 minutes, my legs were really starting to hurt.
Then I remembered that the Amazon Rain forest is 2.124
million square miles and there was still a long way to go. I
knew from the beginning that it would not just take 1 day to
find that stone, so I came prepared with food, water and
tents. When I, saw a valley, I thought that the gem would be
there so we walked towards the it. All of a sudden, I heard
Samantha yell, “Look Out!” As soon as she said that, I
stopped walking and realized that right in front of me was
the great Amazon River.

"We need to cross the river," I said. I was scared at first, I
had heard and read that the great crocs and anacondas lived
here, so I carefully and courageously, stepped in to the
mighty Amazon River. After a few minutes of walking through
the river I felt something biting me when I looked down, I
saw that a piranha was biting me! There were others biting
Eric and Samantha. “Ekk!” Samantha screamed. “Ahh!” Eric
yelled. “Ouch!” I called out, and I yelled “Run!” I was Super-
Duper scared!

Another Problem
As we were running for our lives, something stuck onto my leg
and saw that they were leeches. One thing I knew was that leeches
were parasites and live in a natural freshwater habitat like this one.
Wait a second, I thought, this is the great Amazonian leech. There
was only one on me but it hurt like crazy! It was the ugliest thing I
had ever seen. It was big and had slime and looked like a big blob of
glazed black tar. Did I forget to mention that IT’S SUCKING MY
BLOOD? In less than a minute my ankle was numb. Great! I thought,
just great. Here’s a summary of what’s happening right now: I am
trying to run through water with piranhas chasing me, leeches are
sucking my blood and my ankle is numb. How could this get any
worse? Thought to soon. From what sounded like a far distance I
heard a roar. At least its far away I thought.

Again, thought to soon. I heard a rumble in the trees and a
branch break. The roar was a jaguar’s and it was its lunch
time. Like, I said before, my brother came to find a jaguar.
He was taking pictures of it. We were not running anymore. It
was either getting bit by piranhas and leeches of getting
pounced on by a jaguar. Plan A was better, so we slowly
walked through the river watching the jaguar. It was about to
pounce on one of us when a monkey said “Ouhh Ahhh!”, and
distracted the jaguar. Unfortunately, when it was not paying
attention the monkey became the jaguar’s lunch. I felt sorry
for that monkey; it had saved us. Well, that just a food chain,
I thought, as a tear rolled down my cheek.
