Long Ago,When Earth was a very quiet
place covered with water, there were no
landforms.
nothing but the brilliant blue sea, and the
murky bottom far below.

But life upon this ginormous world full of
water was very dazzling and bright. It
was abounding with waves, splashing of
ducks, and jumping of quick silvery fish.

In the morning , ducks
carried there soft
ducklings, so they
stay dry. In the
afternoon, otters play
games upon water,
rolling between
waves.

And While other animals played, Beavers
bustled back and forth, slapping their tails
against the water. All around them, little
muskrats tried to keep pace, their small paws
paddling against the water's waves.

In the midst of these fast and playful critters
was one very special critter who was very
quiet and slow. His name was Makinauk he
was the the eldest, wisest and largest painted
turtle to ever live in the great blue water

Every, day Makinauk floated upon the
wonderful water in a calm and steady
way. And as he floated, very wrinkled
neck into the air and blink his deep, round
eyes.

Makinauk carried the wisdom of the
centuries in his words, and always
greeted his friends with a very slow
upward smile.

The animals were always delighted when the
animals floated by, because if they were cold
or tired. he would let them climb and lay upon
his back to rest in the hot afternoon sun.
And if they were sad, he would sing very
sweet and happy songs to cheer them up.
And sometimes, when the air was quiet and
moment was just right, all of the animals
would gather for a story from Makinauk and
listen very carefully as he told them great
tales about their wonderful world of water.

One day, Mackinauk swam very steadily
toward the other animals. his old
weathered face appeared quite serious, and
in a low, rumbling voice he told that the
great spirit of the sky said that it was time
for a beautiful piece of land to be built for all
the animals to rest upon.

Makinauk then said that one of them must swim
and get a fistful of rich, wet soil, and put it upon
his back. this, Said Makinauk would be a beginning
of a brand new world.
The animals chattered with excitement, and the
wise old turtle raised his head and spoke to all of
them clearly-
"I shall give to you, a special home
upon my weathered back
where rivers run beneath the sun.
in red and gold and black.
To rest upon the water blue,
a land so new, a land so new."

Naturally, loon wanted to dive first, because she
was most loyal of the creatures, and always willing
to prove her devotion.
She pulled her broad wings tightly to her back,
stretched her long graceful neck, and pointed
herself toward the bottom of the world. moments
later she was back up again, without any soil in her
bill. disappointed, she hopped aboard makinauks
back to dry her wings in the wonderful sun.

Beaver, the most resourceful and hardest working
of the animals, decided that he should be the next
one to try. He stiffened his back and made his nose
twitch, and with aloud slap of his muscular tail,
dove deep toward the bottom of Earth.
small waves rolled over the spot beaver submerged
into the water. couple of minutes later he rose
without a grain of soil, he climbed on Makinauk's
mighty back and laid there in sarrow.

Then otter decide it was here tern to take a try.
with a tight twist, a turn, and a big flip of the tail
she was gone in the depths below.
After trying several times each deeper and
deeper. Eventually she quit, and laid on the turtles
mighty back

The animals rested for quietly on Makinauk's
mighty back feeling sad. While the other animals
sat in sorrow, muskrat came swimming by, and
asked why they were sad. they told him about their
struggling to get soil from the ocean floor.

muskrat was very eager to help, so he told
Makinauk and his friends that he would get the soil.
All the animals except Makinauk laughed because
he was the smallest and most humble of the
creatures.

And because he was a good friend to every animal,
he smiled at muskrat and nodded at him,
approving his offer.
But the other animals were still doubtful as they
watched muskrat take a long deep breath filling
his lungs withe the maximum amount of air. then
to there dismay he dove into the depths.

Little round bubbles popped up all around him
as he made his way to the murky bottom far
below
