Constantinople got its name from where it was located.It's located between two major seas, the black sea & the Mediterranean.
It's such a strategic location because the Byzantine Empire has more promise
, better economy, and is more comforting to their culture.

Emperor JustinianJustinian created the Justinian Code.His 3 ambitious goals were -The Code (lots of laws)
- The Digest (opinions from legal thinkers) - The
Institutes (textbook to tell students how to use laws.)
- The Novellae (New Laws)
Massive Building Program: -Haiga Sophia. -Enlarged
palace with baths, adequate, law courts, schools, and
hospitals.

Empress Theodora and the Role of WomenTheodora was raised by her father, whom was a bear keeper at the Circus (or Hippodrome), and spent her early
life as an actress. She then became a wool spinner and
practiced a non-orthodox doctrine called Monophysitism.
Justinian was swoon by her intelligence and beauty, and
made her mistress, raised her to the rank of patrician, and
later his wife. Theodora was one of the first rulers to recognize
the rights of women. Spent most of her time trying to mitigate
the laws against monophysites. She urges Justinian to stay
during the Nika Rebellion with a powerful speech, basically telling
him that as emperor he shouldn't flee beacuse he'd go from being
emperor to a fugitive, a runaway.

Cultural Diffusion of the Byzantine EmpireSaint Methodius and Saint Cyril are two successful eastern missionaries that worked with the Slavs,
spreading Christianity. Cyril and Methodius created
an alphabet for the Slavic Languages, including
Russia, known as the Cyrillic alphabet today.

Religion- The East-West SchismEmperor Constantine ended farther prosecution ofChristians because he favored the dominant religion
and considered himself Emperor of Christianity.
Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of
the Roman Empire. The Christian church was
separated due to a difference of political views in
the east and the west and a difference in beliefs.
Especially as Byzantium grew and flourished.

excommunicate each other.
