Authors: Andrea Nodarse and Mrs. Suarez's first grade class Illustrated by: Andrea NodarseThe Bottlenose Dolphin

Aa
Dolphins are wildly recognizable creatures
commonly seen in aquariums.

Bb
This specific species of dolphins have a
short, stubby beak.

Cc
Dolphins have a curved dorsal fin that allows
them to swim up to 22 miles per hour.

Dd
They can dive up to 3,000 feet because of
their powerful tails. However, their pointed
flippers also play a part in this.

Ee
Their eyes are located on the sides of their heads.
Because of this, they have almost 360 degree
vision.

Ff
Most people think that dolphins are fish,
but that is not true. Dolphins are mammals.

Gg
Dolphins are very social animals who
generally swim in groups called pods.

Although they normally hunt
independently, they also hunt in pods
sometimes.
Hh

Ii
Dolphins use echolocation, which are high
frequency clicks they let out into the solar
system. This allows them to process
information.

Jj

Dolphins jump for pure fun, to get a
different perspective of the water for food,
and for cleanliness.

Kk
Dolphins are known for being kind to
humans, even wild dolphins usually seek
out human interaction.

Ll

Even though dolphins live underwater,
they need to come up from the water to be
able to breathe.

Mm

They have a muscular flap that covers their
blowhole while underwater and exposes them
once out of the water.

Nn
Dolphins are not involuntary breathers which
means, they must come up to the surface
consciously to take a breath. Because of this, they
never sleep.

Oo

One side of the dolphin's brain remains active for
as long as it lives. This is the part that reminds it
to breathe.

Pp

Dolphins like to play within their groups.
They create bubble rings with the members
of their pods.

Dolphins can swim so quickly because of the
way they are built. This helps them swim
away from threats or swim toward prey.

Rr

As humans we should be respectful
swimmers, and fishermen by keeping our
distance from wild dolphins for their safety.
