Title of Chapter 1:Hitler's Reign
Summary:
*meets Moishe the Beadle<Poor Jew who lives
in Sighet like Elie
*elie<very religious kid who is Jewish as well,
studies the talmud and goes to the temple
every night.
*forced to leave sighet, captured, hungarian
police, cattle train

Symbol: Kabbalah of power
Elie devotes his life to the Kabbalah at
age 12 and he reads the Kabbalah of
power every day as well as
associating with Moishe the
Beadle.

Quote:"Jews listen to me. its all i ask of you. I
don't want money or pity. Only listen to me."
Sometimes my family doesn't listen to me
when something is important they show love
and care but they don't listen to everything.

Literary Device:
Where did i get my strength from? I wanted to come
back to sighet and tell you the story of my death.
This is a simile due to the figure of speech where moishe
the beadle comes back from a concentration camp and
try's to explain what happened to him while still alive.

Title of Chapter 2: Taken
Summary:
*packed inside cattle trains tightly on their way to a
concentration camp which is unknown at this point.
*Now under German jurisdiction they pass the
Hungarian border.
* Mrs. Schächter is beaten by some of the people in the
cattle car because she has proceeded to scream the
whole way and the passengers (more like victims) are
getting fed up.
*Mrs. Schächter screams more about the fire and this
time the Jews can see the crematorium.
*Jews beaten and forced out of the cattle trains now
arriving at Berkenau.

Symbol: Fear
There is so much confusion and fear in
this chapter the Jew's are now packed
inside cattle trains as they meet Mrs.
Schächter who screams often about what
soon
comes a reality.

Quote: "You must be patient"
Thats what i say to the people who have
patients because i am far from patient i have
no patience what so ever.

Literary Device: a piercing cry split the silence
This is a metaphor considering the fact that silence
really cant be split by a cry. the cry is described as
piercing through the silence

Title of chapter 3: The lost path
Summary:
*personal items and bags left in the cattle train
*The prisoners learn about Auschwitz
*Dr. Mengele now comes into place when all of the male
prisoners are now being questioned.
*some of the men are heading towards work others are
headed for the crematorium.
*Elie loses his faith this night seeing so mach as babys
being dumped into fire pits alive and people
automatically being cremated.
*in the morning they see prisoners digging holes and
carrying sand.
*a new transport comes to Auschwiz people discuss faith
but elie has lost his the next morning elie and his father
are assigned their duties

Symbol: Loss
Elie loses all of his hope in this
chapter and does not pray
anymore when the others do just
because what he had seen in the
few hours he had been in the
camps.

Quote: "You must never lose faith, even when
the sword hangs over your head. that's the
teachings of our sages..." (pg.40)
Sometimes i get so down in the dumps that i
lose something like my faith or as in my words
belief in whatever i had but my mind tells me
not to lose that "faith" and i must go on
another day.

Literary Device: "My fathers voice drew me
from my thoughts"
This quote is a metaphor because chlomos
(elies fathers) words did not really draw elie
away like an artist and his character he
attracted him with his words rather than drew.

Title of chapter 4: Dead Empty
Summary:*Buna seems empty
*Elie looks around for a good work assignment
* Next day there is a medical and dental check the
doctor checks for health and the dentist is looking for
gold crowns he almost takes elies out but elie gets out of
it.
*idek goes crazy and beats elies dad and then wants
elies gold crown that the dentist did not get.
*gallows set up in the middle of the camp
*a young polish man is hanged for steeling something in
the air raid.
*after that everything taste of death for the rest of the
night.

Symbol: Death
This picture is symbol of death by the gallows
are put in the middle of the camp and the
polish boy dies but this death puts a hold on
elie the rest of the night.

Quote: "Your lucky son"
someone has once told me i was lucky i believe
so i guess i am I've gotten very lucky with
many things.

Literary Device: That night the soup tasted of corpses
This is a simile because Elie was comparing the soup
with the corpses and soup doesn't taste like a corpse.

Title of chapter 5: The Russian Invasion
Summary:
*Jews in Buna come together to celebrate Rosh
Hashanah, elie doesn't ask for forgiveness.
*On Yom Kippour Elie nor his father participate
*Elie is transfered to construction kommando and isnt in
the same block as his father anymore.
*Akiba Drumer is going to die and he ask for them to
remember him at the Kaddish.
*Elie hurts his leg and he cannot feel it but while he is in
the hospital he hears about the Russian's being close
*The prisoners have to mop the floor of the barracks
before they are evacuated and go out into the snow.

Symbol: Loneliness
The symbol of this chapter is loneliness
because Elie feels lonely mostly
through this chapter and he isn't so
happy with being split from his father.

Quote: "Quickly go on take what I'm giving
you"
Sometimes people try to give me things that i
don't want such as my grandma she gave me
some money and i really did not want it but
she insisted i take it.

Literary Device: Near me lay a Hungarian Jew
who had been struck down with dysentery -
Skin and bone, with dead eyes.
This is a simile because the fact that the mans
eyes were dead is not true they can be
gauged, cut, poked, etc. but they cannot die.

Title of chapter 6: Dead Snow
Summary:
* Prisoners run through the snow, if they are to stop
they will be shot on the spot.
*Zalman is trampled to death.
*The Rabbi's son leaves him behind.
*Julieks violin gets smashed, he is struggling
*when Elie lays down he hears Juliek playinng
Beethoven.
*When Elie awakes he sees Juliek dead and his violin
tarnished.

Symbol: Corpse
There are so many corpses in this chapter and
so much death but the main thing is a lot of
people die during this travel through the snow
including some of Elies friends.

Quote: "I can't..."
The word i can't has been used a lot in my 15
years of living but i learned to get through it
you should never ever say "I can't..." because
you can do anything you put your mind to.

Literary Device: all around me death
was moving in silently, without
violence.
This is a simile because death doesn't
move in Elie is giving death a human
like personality.

Title of chapter 7: Fighting for attention
Summary:
*crammed in a train car for the night
*Elies dad almost thrown out
*German workmen throw bread into the cars amused to
watch these poor souls fight to the death for a crumb.
*someone cries out as they die then everyone else starts
to wail
*The train arrives at Buchenwald
