Land and area Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia and once known as
the Khmer Empire, is a country located in
the southern portion of the Indochina
Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It covers a
land area of 181,035 square kilometres
and there are about 14.9 million people
now living in this ancient country.

Cambodia4

Most of the people in Cambodia speak Khmer, it'sconsidered to be the official language of this country.
With approximately 16 million speakers, it is the
second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language
(after Vietnamese). Khmer has been influenced
considerably by Sanskrit and Pali, especially in the
royal and religious registers, through the vehicles
of Hinduism and Buddhism.
5

In Cambodia, there are about 7 main ethnic groups, the largest of which are
the Khmer, who comprise approximately
90% of the total population and primarily
inhabit the lowland Mekong subregion
and the central plains.
Culture 6

The Khmer8

Of the minority groups, the largest is Vietnamese. There are also a significant
number of Chinese descendants who
dominate the business community and
indigenous minority groups of Hmong,
Pong, and Tai amongst others who are
collectively known as Khmer Loeu.

9

Throughout Cambodia's long history, religion has been a major source of
cultural inspiration. Over nearly two
millennia, Cambodians have developed
an unique Khmer belief from the
syncreticism of indigenous animistic
beliefs and the Indian religions of
Buddhism and Hinduism.

But other ethnic groups in this countryhave their own belief. In general they see
their world filled with various invisible
spirits (often called yang), some
benevolent, others malevolent. They
associate spirits with rice, soil, water,
fire, stones, paths, and so forth.
Sorcerers or specialists in each village
contact these spirits and prescribe ways
to appease them.

13

The economy of Cambodia at present follows an open market system (market
economy) and has seen rapid economic
progress in the last decade.

Economy 14

Cambodia's two largest industries are textiles and tourism, while agricultural
activities remain the main source of income
for many Cambodians living in rural areas.
The service sector is heavily concentrated on
trading activities and catering-related services.
Recently, Cambodia has reported that oil and
natural gas reserves have been found off-shore.
