Olive lives in Beansville, Texas. She
lives with her Mom, Dad, and dog
Charlie. Their town is famous for their
beans! They were so soft on the inside
and helped everyone grow strong and
tall. Olive was smaller than the other
kids because she hated the beans! She
just didn't like the way they looked.

Every night at dinner the bowl of beans were
passed around the table and every night Olive
refused to eat them. She didn't like the way
they looked, or the way they smelled. Even
though she had never tried them Olive did not
want to try something and end up not liking it.

Her best friends Levi and Molly both loved the
beans they ate at dinner, and they were both
so tall and strong! When the three of them
played monkey-in-the-middle, Olive was
always stuck in the middle from how small she
was. In Tag she could never run as fast as the
others.

One day in school a mean kid, Spencer,
pointed out how small Olive was. Olive got so
sad about this. Her face began to get red and
she could feel herself get very very upset.
Mrs. Wlison, the teacher, came over to help
with the problem. She told Spencer that it’s
not nice to point things out. She also told
Olive that when she was a little kid, she was
smaller too and what helped her grow was the
beans!

After school Olive went to her room to play
with her toys. She began thinking about what
would happen if she never eats beans in her
life. Will she become smaller than her toys?
Will her parents lose her from how tiny she
gets? What’s going to happen to her when
she's an adult? Will anyone be able to see
her?

The next morning Olive had her Dad mark how
tall she was compared to last year. She
shrunk! She was a whole inch shorter than a
year ago! Her worst fear was becoming true
and she didn't know what to do about it. Olive
didn’t want to be small forever! She wanted to
be able to win monkey-in-the-middle, she
wanted to be able to run as fast as her friends.
