Meet Sylvester. Sylvester is a protostar. A
protostar is something that is almost ready to be
a real star.

Hi there!
1

Sylvester is smaller than the average protostar.

Sylvester

2

Still, that didn't mean his dreams were small.
Sylvester wanted to become a supergiant, one of
the largest stars in the universe!

3

Since he was small, he was made fun of by the other
stars. "Haha," the red star said, "you're the tiniest
star Sylvester. You'll never become a supergiant."
"Yeah", the yellow star said, "get used to it".

4

Sylvester knew they were lying and trying to be
mean to him, but over time he started to believe the
other stars. "Maybe I'm not good enough to become
a supergiant," he said sadly to himself, and started
crying.

5

The whole time, an old and wise white dwarf
star had been watching Sylvester.

!
6

The star floated up to Sylvester and said "You
know, I was just like you when I was a
protostar. It was my dream to become a
supergiant as well."

?

You know...

7

"But I was made fun of and told I
couldn't become one."

8

"I believed them too. I was sad for many years,
but one day, I decided I was tired of people
telling me what I could and could not do."

9

"I worked and worked, trying my best, and eventually I
reached my goal. I may not look like it anymore, but I
used to be a supergiant. A supergiant becomes a white
dwarf, like I am now."

Wow, I can't
believe you were
once a supergiant!

10

"My point is, don't believe those bullies. If you
work hard enough and believe in yourself, you can
become a supergiant star." And with that, the
white dwarf left.

Bye!

11

Sylvester took these words to heart. He worked
all the time, spinning around to gather dust and
gas, making him grow larger and larger.

12

Sylvester did this for a while. He span for years,
trying to gather enough dust to make the inside of
him heat up so he could turn into a real star, but
nothing happened.

13

He was losing hope. Once again, he sadly said,
“I’ll never become a supergiant,” and began to
cry.

Why isn't it
working?
14

Suddenly, Sylvester felt something. He had achieved
nuclear fusion! This is when a protostar becomes hot
enough to become a real star. Sylvester had reached his
first step on his way to his goal.
I did it!

15

Sylvester felt like a rock star. He had proved all of the
other stars wrong, he could become a supergiant. He
knew that the old man would’ve been proud of him if he
were still there.

16

He was now in the main sequence stage, where
stars burn the element hydrogen inside of them.
For many years, Sylvester was happily burning
through his hydrogen supply.

This is great!
17

Eventually, Sylvester grew older burning the
hydrogen inside of him, and ran out of it. He
suddenly started to crash in on himself. “Oh no!”
Sylvester thought.

18

What Sylvester didn't realize, is that when he
burned hydrogen, he made a new element, called
helium! He started burning the helium now. He
also noticed that he had worked hard and grown
a lot.

I grew!
19

As he burned the helium, he saw that he was
growing! The energy he made by burning that
helium made him get bigger!
