Personal Narrative

Waking up on Christmas morning as a child is always special. I always woke up bright and early, excitedly waking everyone in the house. I simply could not control my own excitement, the anticipation of opening my presents was too much to handle. Christmas day when I was ten years old started out just like any other. I woke up at 7 o’clock, jumping out of bed and rushing to the living room to see all of the presents under the tree. Piled high around the tree, the number of presents seemed infinite. Boxes of all shapes and sizes wrapped in candy cane wrapping paper promised many exciting new toys.
3
My next task was to wake my older sister and parents. Upon dragging them out of bed, I called my grandma and poppy who lived next door, “Hurry, it’s time to come over and open presents!” I said. My mom made the same breakfast she did every year, eggs, toast, pancakes, and sausage. As I ate my breakfast and drank my chocolate milk, I could only think of the presents I would soon be unwrapping. I was so excited, hoping my parents had finally bought me the iPod touch I’d been asking for. Little did I know, the best Christmas gift I’d receive that year would be coming from my older sister, and it certainly was not an iPod.
4
As we all finished eating, grandma and poppy finally arrived. I dragged everyone to the living room and sat myself right in front of the tree. I began passing out the presents, making sure that everyone had a present to open. Once everyone had a gift in their hands, I finally tore the wrapping paper of my first gift, unveiling the cute sweater I had been wanting. As I continued unwrapping gifts, I discovered a horseshoe necklace, a new pair of riding boots, 3 cd’s, a new bed set, 2 Breyer’s horses, 1 game for my Gameboy, 4 movies, an arts set, and a new saddle.
5
While my mom began cleaning the wrapping paper that was strewn across the living room floor, my sister and I carried our gifts to our rooms. Once the living room was presentable again, we said goodbye to grandma and poppy, giving them both hugs before they returned home. “Girls, it’s time to get ready to go to Orange Park.” My mom said. My sister and I ran outside to take care of the horses, giving them food, water, hay, and their special Christmas treats. Once all of the horses were taken care of, I dressed in my new sweater and put on my horseshoe necklace. I couldn’t wait to see Maw maw, Paw paw, and of course, my favorite cousin Shelby. “It’s time to go girls! We don’t want to be late!” My father yelled from the front door. “Coming!” my sister and I called back, grabbing our things and running to the truck.
6
We made the hour long drive to Maw maw and Paw paws house for the huge annual family get together. Once we arrived, I leaped from the truck, eager to find Shelby and show of my new sweater. As I ran inside, I stopped briefly to give Maw maw and Paw paw hugs, “Merry Christmas!” I said, “Where’s Shelby?” Laughing, Maw maw replied, “She’s out back, playing fetch with Daisy.” I ran outside and was immediately greeted with a painful hug from both Shelby and her younger sister Madison. Laughing I attempted to hug them back but, as usual they were squeezing me too hard for me to move. “Merry Christmas!” I said breathlessly when they finally released me.
7
“Merry Christmas! They both replied. “Look what I got!” Shelby said, showing off her new doll. “Wow! That’s awesome! Look at my new sweater!” I replied as Daisy, my grandparents English bulldog came back and dropped her ball at my feet. I knelt down to pet her and give her a treat. “Girls! Everyone’s here, it’s time to come inside!” My mother yelled from the house. We rushed inside, ready to eat Christmas Dinner. Piling our plates high with turkey, ham, pasta salad, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls, we headed off to the wooden picnic table that my Paw paw had hand made before we were even born.
8
After all our plates were licked clean and our bellies were full, the whole family made their way to the living room to open the gifts from Maw maw and Paw paw. As always, I received Christmas pajamas, Christmas socks from my grandparents, as well as the new backpack I had been hoping for. “Thank you so much!” I exclaimed, giving them both huge hugs.
9
Once all the gifts were opened, my sister came over to me with a small box and said, “Oh, Summer, I almost forgot to give you your Christmas gift from me!” As I opened the tiny box, unsure of what to expect, I was very surprised to find nothing more than a small piece of paper. With a puzzled look, I slowly unfolded the paper, which read “Brown and white with a hint of blue, will be your gift from me to you. To find your next clue, here’s what you must do: Look under your bed, where you’ll find something red.” My sister was standing there, with a huge smile on her face, “You’ll just have to wait until we get home to find your next clue.” She said.
10
Shortly after, I was finally able to get my parents and my sister away from the family and into the truck to head home. All I could think about for the entire hour was what I would find under my bed. I had never had to search for a Christmas gift before, this must mean something good. I just couldn’t think of what my sister could possible have gotten me.
11
As the truck came to a stop in the driveway, I ran inside and rushed to my room. Looking under my bed, I found a small red envelope. Tearing it open, the note inside read, “It’s big, bigger than you, find a pig, and you’ll find your next clue.” As I finished reading, I ran for the pig pen trying to think of what could be white and brown, with a hint of blue, and even bigger than me along the way. As I quickly approached the pig pen, I immediately noticed a second red envelope hanging from the gate.
12
Snatching it up and opening it immediately, I discovered another clue which read, “It’s very near, you can even see it from here. Inside of a shoe, will be your final clue.” Looking around, trying to decide what could possibly be my Christmas gift, I removed both of my shoes, only to not discover anymore clues. I ran back inside, to look in all of the shoes, finally finding a small green envelope inside of my old riding boots. The last clue read, “You’ll have so much fun, your gift really likes to run.”
13
As I read the last clue, my confusion only grew, I had no idea what could possible be bigger than me, be able to be seen from the pig pen, white and brown, with a hint of blue, and really like to run. As I read each clue again, hoping to find some more information, my dad approached me with a blindfold. “Are you ready to see your gift?” He said. “Yes!” I exclaimed. “Great, I have to blindfold you first though.” My dad replied as he covered my eyes and began walking me through the house, until we were outside on the porch. “Are you ready Juli?” He asked. “Almost!” I heard my sister say. “Wait, don’t start it up yet!” my dad said in return. Thinking, that maybe it was a golf cart or a new four wheeler, I was desperately listening for the sound of an engine, confused as to how my sister could afford something so expensive. “Okay, you can take her blindfold off now.” My sister said.
14
My anticipation grew as my dad slowly, painstakingly untied the blind fold and peeled it away from my eyes. As the blindfold fell away, I saw my sister standing in front of my, holding her amazing paint horse, Mccue. As I stared, dumbfounded, she handed me the lead rope, “I want you to have him.” She said. Speechless, I looked at the magnificent animal standing before me and then looked back at my sister, managing to choke out the words “Are you sure?” Smiling, she replied, “Yes, I’m sure. You’ve been doing a great job of riding him lately and I think he should be your new jumping horse.” Excitedly I gave her and Mccue both huge hugs, I just couldn’t believe that he was actually my horse.
15
I remember thinking that he was the best Christmas gift I’d ever received, and I still feel the same.
