This book is dedicated to my Professor Chelsea Tracy-Bronson for bringing the world of Special Education to a whole new light. That light is awfully bright now. Thank you.

Hi, my name is Bob, and I have been identified as having an Emotional Disturbance Disability. I am lonely, and I was put here because I have thrown a chair in class many times. However, my parents think that I should be taught with other children, so they are working with my principal and other teachers to see what accommodations and related services would be best for me. I would like to be with friends, because I am lonely in here all by myself.

When RTI (Response to Intervention) did not work for my behavior and my academics, which is a three tiered, "data driven and structured procedure for analyzing students' learning problems," (Friend and Bursuck, p. 49) my parents had a meeting with professionals at the school. They all decided together that I could be seen "as a learner with multiple strengths, intelligences and capabilities," (C and T-B., p. 5) This is a law guaranteed by the IDEA (Individual Disability Education Improvement Act) that I could have my chance! This now meant that I was entitled to a "free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs." (C &T-B, p. 7.) This is great news! I am really excited!

Some of my related services are to have
a Speech Therapist, time with a psychologist, who "designs strategies to address academic, social or behavior problems." I will also have a counselor, who "assess students' social and emotional functioning, including areas of self-concept; motivation; attitute towards school, peers, and teachers, and social skills." (Friend and Bursuck, pgs. 39 and 40) I like to spend time with them, because I am able to work on the strategies that I need for school and home. My accommodation is that I get extra time to carefully communicate what I want to in class.

I now have an IEP or Individual Education Program that says exactly what I need to communicate with my friends in a positive way with a fancy computer that helps me to decide exactly what I want to say in class. I am really excited to be with other friends.

That would be correct!
