What is an insect?
Insects are the most diverse group of animals on our planet.
Insects have three pairs of legs and three body sections called head, thorax, and abdomen.
Most insects have wings and antennae.

If a second grader was as strong as an ant, she would be able to pick up a car!

Ant
Ants are small but powerful insects. They live in colonies that have thousands of members. The colony has one Queen Ant, female workers and males. The queen and the males have wings.
The queen is the only ant that can lay eggs within the colony. She can lay up to 1500 eggs in one day!

A butterfly goes through a complete metamorphosis. This means there are four parts to their life.

Butterfly
Butterflies are usually day flying insects. They have four wings covered in tiny scales. Butterflies spend most of their lives flowering plants.

Cicada are large insects with round bulging eyes on the corner of their head and short antennae. They can live up to 17 years in the wild. Cicada feed by sucking juice from the roots of trees.

Male cicadas are the loudest insects in the world. They sing to attract females.

Dragonfly
Dragonflies have long bodies, transparent wings, and large eyes. Even thought they have six legs, dragonflies do not walk very well. They are great flyers and can hover in one place, fly very fast, and even fly backwards! They are some of the fastest
insects in the world, reaching speeds
of over 30 miles per hour!

Earwigs are about the size of a peanut.
Earwigs are tiny insects that live all over the world except in Antarctica. They prefer to be in damp places like under leaves or fallen trees.
Earwigs like to eat plants and pollen from flowers occasionally they eat fallen fruits like apple.

Firefly
Fireflies are a family of beetles called Lampyridae. They as very especial little insects as they are able to produce light. Adult fireflies use flashes of light to attract mates. They also use their light as a defense mechanism, by flashing their light it lets predators know they are not a tasty meal.

Grasshopper
Some grasshopper species make noises by rubbing their back legs against the fore-wings or body, or by snapping their wings when flying.
Grasshoppers grow to about 2 inches long, with some growing as big as 5 inches long! Females are usually bigger than males.

Horntail Wasp
The horntail wasp gets its name
from the strong projecting spike out
of its abdomen. The live most of their lives in
trees, moving down to the bark of the tree by adulthood.

Ischnura Damselfly
The Ischnura Damselfy is found among vegetation along the banks of ponds, rivers, and canals in Asia and Australia.
They prey on small aquatic insects and other aquatic larvae.

Japanese Beetle
As the name suggests the Japanese beetle is native to Japan.
It has a typical life cycle of about a year.
Japanese beetles are very clumsy flyers and often run into things.
The feed on common crops and plants.

The katydid is a type of cricket which has wings that look like leafs, this helps it hide among plants. They can be found on bushes or tree branches in North America.

type of beetle that has two sets of wings.
The outer wings are hard shell like

which are very delicate.

If a ladybug feels threatened it plays dead and releases a bad tasting fluid from its legs.

The Nut Weevil is a type of
beetle that has a very long snout.
They have a life cycle of about 2 years.
The Nut Weevil can typically be found around nut crops.
The female Nut Weevil has a longer snout than the male.

Did you know...
Only the male Oriental Cockroach can fly.
The Oriental Cockroach has a life span of 1 to 1.5 years. The females are larger than the males. Although the female have tiny wings, they do not fly.
