Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was this girl named Juicy Lanette. “A young lady of not more than seventeen, in a riding-cloak, and still holding her straw travelling-hat by its ribbon in her hand…. a short, slight, pretty figure, a quantity of golden hair, a pair of blue eyes that met his own with an inquiring look, and a forehead with a singular capacity” (Dickens 15). She was a princess who craved freedom and love. It was her coming of age next month and her mom, the Queen of England, set up a ball for all of England and France to see the beautiful princess. Although France and England weren’t “friendly” with each other, the royal family wanted to make peace and invited France.

Then came along a man named Darvis Torry, “He had a good leg, and was a little vain of it, for his brown stockings fitted sleek and close, and were a fine texture; his shoes and buckles too, though, plain, were trim. He wore an odd little sleek crisp flaxen wig, setting very close his head: which wig is too, it is to be presumed, was made of hair, but which looked far more as though it were spun from filaments of silk or glass…..” (Dickens 13). He lived in France and didn’t have so much money, but had enough to support himself.

One hot, sunny day, Darvis received a letter from from Gary Muncher. The letter was an invitation that invited him to the ball of Juicy Lanette and her coming of age. “A despatch sent to you from over yonder T. and Co.” (Dickens 14). He was invited to cater the ball. Darvis didn’t really want to go, but was convinced by his conscience that he needed to attend for some reason. Darvis made the decision of going and started gathering all of his savings on a tuxedo and an apron for the ball.

Two weeks later, the day of the ball has arrived, and Juicy was in her room dressed and ready. Although she was ready for the ball, she was hesitant. She had a bad vibe and didn’t know what the night held for her. As she was thinking, she was snapped out of her thoughts by a knock on her door. She opened the door and was greeted by her long lost father, whom she thought was dead for 17 years. “Hailing his softened tone and manner, his daughter fell upon her knees before him, with her appealing hands upon her breast” (Dickens 32). Juicy was shocked. She immediately began to cry, all the makeup on her face forgotten. As she was crying, she heard yet another knock on her door and a guard called her, through the door to come out and greet everyone. Juicy fixed herself, left the room, and entered the ballroom.

As she entered the ballroom, she was greeted by so many people, standing up and bowing their heads to show their respect for the princess. While she was greeting everybody, she suddenly felt a cool liquid running through the middle of her dress. Juicy gasped and looked down to see a big purple stain of wine on her handmade gown as well as all over the floor. “All of the people within reach had suspended their business, or their idleness, to run to the spot and drink the wine” (Dickens 31). Juicy was too busy looking at everyone licking the wine on the floor to realise that Darvis, the waiter, was staring straight at her in disbelief. He quickly began to apologize but Juicy was too mesmerized by his eyes to even comprehend what he was saying.
