Chapter 1: The End of Basic
"Attention, rise and shine maggots'', said staff sergeant Johnson. "Make your beds, brush your teeth, take a shower, and be at P.T. at 0600. Breakfast will be at 0530.''
Yes sir, said the platoon of Alpha Company 2-54th Infantry Regiment.
"Private Joker, private Jeff Sullivan, private Granger, and private Chubbs report to my office ate the end of breakfast for a brief meeting", said sergeant Johnson.
"Sir, yes, sir", we said.
All four of us took a shower, got dressed, and brushed our teeth. We walked up to the mess hall for breakfast. We had scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast.
"What do you think our meeting with our staff sergeants is going to be about?'' asked private Chubbs, who is an African American and who is very ambitious.
"I don't know", said private Granger, who is the most intelligent of all of us.
"What do you reckon?" asked private Jeff Sullivan, who is the most toughest of us.
"Maybe it's a special mission or something", I said.
After we ate breakfast, the four of headed up to our sergeants' office.
"Sir, you wanted to talk to us", I said to staff sergeant Johnson.
"Ah, yes, please sit down, I have some news for you four."
"What is it, sergeant Johnson?", I said.
“You four were chosen by staff Sergeant Watson and I to go on a very important mission.”
“Where to Sarge?”, asked private Granger.
“To Jordan”, said staff sergeant Johnson.
“When do we leave for our deployment to Jordan?”, asked private Chubbs.
“You four will leave the day after graduation, which is on Sunday”, said Sergeant Johnson.
“What is our mission?”, asked private Jeff Sullivan, who is my brother.
“Your mission is to infiltrate an ISIS occupied threshold in Syria, and to capture the leader”, said sergeant Johnson.
“Who is this guy? Is he dangerous? What did he do that warrants such action?, I asked.
"He is the leader of that threshold, he and his men attacked a base in Jordan, and took 25 soldiers to their base in Syria", said sergeant Johnson.
How long was their journey back to the ISIS base in Syria?, asked private Granger.
"325 miles", said sergeant Johnson.
"What is his name?, I asked.
"His name is Abar Abu", said sergeant Johnson.
"How do you know this?, I asked.
"We have a spy near that ISIS threshold. His name is colonel Richards of the 124th British in -fantry regiment who was captured and escaped. He said he saw the 25 US soldiers being escorted into the base", said sergeant Johnson.
"So what's our mission sergeant Watson?, asked private Chubbs, and "who is our commander?"
"Your mission like I said before is to infiltrate that ISIS base and rescue those 25 US soldiers. Privates Joker and Sullivan are in command. For this mission you need two commanders for specific reasons you'll encounter later", said sergeant Johnson.
"You're doing this because you are all at the top of the whole platoon, you know what to do and how to do it, and you're confident. That's what we need for this mission, understand", said sergeant Johnson.
Yes, sir", we all said.
"Ok, now get to P.T.", said sergeant Johnson, sergeant Watson is waiting for you".
"Yes,sir".
As we left our sergeant's office, we headed outside for physical training.
"Wow, what a big mission", said private Chubbs.
"Yeah, were going to face a lot of obstacles throughout our mission", said private Granger.
"What kind of obstacles are we going to face throughout this mission?", asked private Chubbs.
"We are going to face hardships such as out-taking enemy flanks, being sneak-attacked, and things like that", private Jeff Sullivan proclaimed.
"It's going to be hell", said private Jeff Sullivan.
Throughout the day, we climbed, did pull-ups, and pushed ourselves beyond our limits. We also did push-ups, ran through mud, army crawled, and we even fired different types of weapons such as M16's, grenade launchers, and machine guns.
"Wow that was challenging but fun", said private Granger.
"Yes it was, my favorite part was the rifle training and learning how to throw grenades", I said.
Finally we ran 5 miles to complete our P.t. for the day. After we finished P.T. which was at 0'700pm, we ate dinner. We had roast beef, potatoes, and corn.
After we ate dinner, we headed up to our barracks. We got changed, brushed our teeth, and went to bed.
The next morning, Tuesday, November 8, of the last week of basic training, we ran and did our exercises. But, all we could think about was our "Big Mission".
"How long do you think were going to be out there?", asked private Jeff Sullivan.
"I don't know, maybe a year or two", I said.
"Maybe", said private Chubbs.
As the day went along none of us could stop thinking of our "Big Mission". Later that night before bed, we all sat on our beds and talked more about our "Big Mission" and our feelings about it.
"How do you feel about the mission, private Chubbs", asked private Jeff Sullivan.
" I feel anxious and scared". How do you feel private Joker?".
"I feel really terrified but excited", I said." How do you private Granger?".
"I feel really terrified?"
