Once upon a time, there was an apple named Mike who lived in an apple tree.

2
One day, Hungry Carl was walking and saw Mike the apple.

3

He remembered what his mom had told him, "An apple a day keeps the doctor a way" so he decided to eat the apple to grow up as a healthy man.
4

Carl grabbed Mike from the tree and took a bite from him.
"Mhhh thats a good apple" said Carl.

5

"Oh no" said Mike. Suddenly he had begun a new adventure.

6

Mike began the first step in the digestive process, ingestion.
In the mouth he was being mechanically and chemically digested, he was being chewed so he would become smaller and easier to swallow.

Oh no!
7

He travelled through the esophagus to the stomach where the digestion process continued.

8

Oh no!
Inside the stomach, Mike was being mechanically digested again, but this time he wasn't being chewed, he was being churned.
9
Next, he was chemically digested by breaking him down into smaller pieces. The gastric juice helped digest the protein by the pepsin in it. Mike the apple was now Mike the chyme.

10

From the stomach, Mike went into the small intestine. In the small intestine Mike met Bob the Bacon and Peter the Bread. Bob was made of protein, lipids and fats, Peter was made of carbohydrates. Mike then realized he was mostly made of fibers, a substance that could not be digested.
11

Bob the bacon realized he was mostly made up of saturated fats. Peter the bread realized he did not have whole grains and had added sugars. They came to the conclusion that Mike was the best choice for Carl to eat because he didn't have added sugars and had large amounts of fiber.

12

Mike is still being chemically digested by enzymes. The enzymes are produced in the pancreas and they break down Mike even more. The Pancreas also makes enzymes to digest Peter and Bob.

13

In the small intestine Mike went through absorption. In absorption, his nutrients are being absorbed by the villi.

14
The villi are very small tentacles inside the small intestine with blood inside of them. This helps them take the nutrients directly into the blood.
