Hi, I have been having issues with back pain, blood in my urine, and had a fever. I also feel like I have a lump in my stomach area.

It may be that you have a urinary tract infection or a kidney infection. I will order a CT urogram and ultrasound as well as order some blood tests.

3
For the CT urogram, you will have to change into a hospital gown and remove all jewelry. We will have to place an IV in your arm in order to give you some fluids that will allow us to look at your kidneys. We will do the blood test at the same time. Then you will go through a doughnut-shaped machine that takes images of your kidneys.

4

5
The ultrasound will involve using a cold gel and a remote called a transducer on your abdominal area that will transmit images of your kidneys to the machine.

6

7

Based on your results, it would appear you have a ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. This basically is a blockage at the point where the kidney attaches to the ureter which attaches to the bladder.

8

What does that mean?
9

The kidneys are the site of urine production, and the ureters are tubes that bring the urine to the bladder where urine is stored until you pee. Basically, the flow of urine out of the kidneys is being blocked.

10

Can it be fixed?
11

Yes. We can perform a pyeloplasty. This is a surgery in which the surgeon makes a small cut on the side of your body that has the blockage. He will cut below and above the obstruction to remove it and then connect the healthy ureter to the tissue above. Then the surgeon sews your skin back together.
12
On the day of the surgery, you will come to the registration desk and receive a hospital ID which has your name, birthday, and medical record number on it. This is how everyone will know who you are.
13
Then you will wait in the waiting area until you are called by nurse Blue. You may want to bring a book to read or music to listen to as you wait.
14
Nurse Blue will then take you to a room where you will change into your hospital gown, be asked questions about what you know regarding your surgery and clarify any questions you may have, take vital signs such as blood pressure and temperature, as well as place your IV.
