When were you born?
Deloris Pittenger, now called Dee, was born in Hays, KS @ St. Anthony Hospital on August 30th 1950 on her mother's birthday.

How would you explain your family growing up?
She had 4 sisters and it wasn't an ideal childhood because her dad was alcoholic and became abusive when he drank. She had to grow up quickly, as he mother worked a lot and she was the oldest so she took care of her siblings while her mother worked.

What was it like growing up with 4 sisters?
They fought a lot, as most people know siblings do, but she remembers good times as well! She recounts her childhood memories of dancing on her porch late at night to her friends records and playing softball games with the other neighborhood kids during the days.

Where did you grow up?
WaKeeney, KS. The town of WaKeeney's name is a result of two men, James Keeney and Albert Warren, who were the men who established a colony there originally.

How old were you when you started to drive?
She was 14 when she began to drive!

What was your first car?
A white 4-door Mercury Comet was her first car.

What was your favorite show as a kid?
She enjoyed watching a few shows. Some of these included Lawrence Welk Show, Drag Net, American Bandstand & Bonanza.

When you were little, what was your dream job?
She wanted to join the army, as she remembers it being referred to as the WAC (Womens Army Corp)! She remembers seeing all of the Uncle Sam signs saying "I Want You!"

What was your favorite age?
She enjoyed being in her 40s because she felt she had stability.

How did you meet my grandpa? And what is marriage like?
She met her husband at a place called the Lamplighter here in Salina, and he was hitting on one of her friends. Later, she was living at some apartments while she was attending Brown Mackie, she went to the bowling alley and made friends with her future husband's father and asked if he had any available sons. Turns out he did and she already knew him! She said, "so I guess it was meant to be!"

Who was your first love?
She says she thinks her husband was her first love. She had a crush on someone in her hometown growing up, but at that time, she says she doesn't think she knew what love was.

What is your favorite memory from after you had your son? & worst memory?
Her worst memory after having her son Darren was the death of her second child, a daughter, 3 days after she was born due to a hole in her heart. Her name was Danielle. Her favorite memory was having her first grandchild, which was me!

As a parent, what was your favorite thing about Salina?
The people here were friendly and it was a nice town to raise a family in.

How did you feel when your son told you he was going to have his first baby? Then when he told you it was a girl?
She was very excited when she found out he was having a child, but when she found out it was gonna be a girl, she was even more excited.

What is your favorite memory that includes our family?
When she lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado her grandchildren used to come up and spend spring break with her. When they were there, she would take them all kinds of places and they always had a good time.

Where were you when 9/11 happened? What were you thinking when it happened?
She was at her office at work and she had heard a customer talking about a plane crash, but later received a phone call from her sister talking about what was happening. She couldn't help but think about all of the innocent people that weren't going to make it out of there.

Can you think of any other major events in history that you have been alive for and remember?
She was in 8th grade when JFK was shot. She was also alive for when Martin Luther King was becoming famous. Nixon's impeachment is also remembered by her pretty clearly.

What is the scariest thing that ever happened to you?
She had to go to Wesley Medical Center and they ran a lot of tests. She was scared she was going to be told she had a brain tumor, but she ended up having a vascular malformation.

What was your favorite childhood game?
She enjoyed playing the game marbles with her family, and the enjoyment of the game is still spreading through her family as her grandchildren still play it.

Do you agree that wisdom comes with age?
She completely agrees with this statement because as you get older, you go through many ups and downs and as you go, you learn from experience and mistakes.

What is some advice you want to share with teens nowadays?
"Stay family oriented and be involved in anything you can. Faith is also important to have in life. Also being honest to who you are is a key part of life along with loving yourself. Be proud of who you are."
