Mr.Helmer was born in Santa Catarina, Brazil on April 26, 1939.

He lived there for ten years, until he and his family moved to Kansas. He was unhappy when he was a child but grew to love Kansas, yet he still wishes he could go back to Brazil and revisit. He loves animals and wishes more people took better care of them.

His dad was a pastor of the Lutherin Church who had been a missionary to Brazil. They wanted to move back in order to be closer to family.

Growing up he wanted nothing more than to be like his father, he even wanted to follow in his footsteps of being a pastor.

He grew up during WWII and his family spoke German. He spoke three languages growing up, Portuguese, English, and German.

Although he has forgotten most of Portuguese but he is still fluent in both English and German.

His most important memory as a child was when he left for the United States. He remembers a woman from the church who was sad to see him go.

He has a strong connection to immigrants because of this. He wishes to change the laws on the topic.

Mr. Helmer was 12 when he got his first phone he says people could listen to you while you were talking on the phone since the phones were connected to the same line. He made about 3 phone calls growing up because he really didn't have any reason to use it. He does have a cell phone now but doesn't like it. He thinks how cars have changed over the years is very interesting

Mr Helmer met his wife at McPherson college. They went together at that college for a year and a half. They got married and had 3 kids Paty, Paul and John. His favorite memory as an adult was his 10th anniversary of being married. He has one beautiful grandchild. One thing he loves to do everyday is help out teenagers.
