Ms. Williams fourth grade class dedicates this book to anyone who believes in change and growth. To anyone who loves watching plants bloom and taking time to dream. We also dedicate this book to our seventh grade buddies. Thank you for taking time to grow with us.
Seventh Graders' Dedication
We dedicate this book to the seventh graders of future generations. We hope all students have the opportunity to mentor a fourth grader, to impact them with positive acceptance and many memories. Mentoring your fourth grader can be a challenge, but it is what you make of it. You can also have the time of your life and meet a friend you may know for years to come. We have made lifelong friends, and hope you do too!

Hiresh and Adam
The first time I met my garden buddy, I felt excited to work with him for this new project in the garden. We both like sports and we have a lot of things in common. I felt that he was a nice person that I can work with easily. The first time I met my garden buddy, I felt that he was a quiet, but friendly person. I felt exited to work with him in the garden. Also, we both like sports.
For the future, I would like to be a scientist, or a doctor when I grow up. My garden and I buddy have a lot of things in common, and we both like sports like football. We also ride on the same bus. We both like tomatoes from the garden, and a lot of other plants. For the future, I would like to be a sports player, when I grow up.
6
We have a lot in common, such as, we both like soccer. We ride on the same bus too. We bot like caterpillars, and butterflies in the garden.
My first impressions of the garden were; it had a lot of beautiful, edible plants. They were a gorgeous decoration in the garden. Another thing that made the garden beautiful was, that very few of the plants that grew flowers that were wonderfully detailed, in the garden caught my eye. My first impressions, on the garden was that it was an exciting place to work with my partner and eat tomatoes and other things.
I learned with my buddy, about a lot of different types of plants that grew the garden that were, new to us. We also learned, how the plants in the garden grew. Lastly, we learned how to take care of the plants in the garden. With my buddy I learned, how various types of plants in the garden grow. We also learned how to take care of all the fragile plants.
One understanding that I had in the garden was; that working together can help finish a certain
7
job quicker. Another insight that I gained was that the garden was an enjoyable place to be and the air was satisfying. One insight that I had in the garden was that teamwork can help finish a task faster. Also, the garden is a pleasurable place.
My buddy and I both want to play sports when we grow up. Also, we both want to be wealthy in our lives. My buddy and I both want to be professional sports players when we grow up, and be rich.

Jack and Daniel
On the first day meeting my fourth grader I was excited for who I would be paired with. Then, when my name was called and I got assigned to Daniel and we both got along very well.
When I first met my garden buddy, Dan, I was super excited to meet my buddy and hoped they were nice. Turned out he was really nice so I was super happy. We talked for a while and I learned his name was Daniel and that we had a lot in common.
At first didn’t know what to say but then we found many interests we both had. We both introduced ourselves and bonded over the topic of STEM..
9
My buddy, Daniel, and I have a ton of in common like STEM careers and things like robots, engineering, and programming.
My first impression of the garden was that it was super pretty. The vegetables were vibrant with colors along with the flowers.
My first impression of the garden was seeing all the different herbs, the vegetables and the many vibrant-colored flowers blooming.
One thing I learned from writing in the garden with a fourth grader is that the differences in personality from the two grades are, while vast, able to be worked into a comfortable friendship. Even though my partner and I have many similar interests like STEM the differences are vast.
While working in the garden I learned many things about my partner, Jack, we both like STEM. He also likes to build robots and code them as well as coding games.
Our shared dream is STEM Careers such as robotics, engineering and mathematics.

Chloe and Gia
When Mrs. Schell told us that we were going to be working with fourth graders I was super excited to start. When we went to the garden we saw many different shades of green and yellow. The garden is as vibrant as the sun and as beautiful as all of the flowers in it.
When I first met Gia, my fourth grade buddy, I thought that she was really nice and also very smart. I was really excited to work together with her because she seemed excited to write with me. I was also excited because I wanted to help Gia learn many things about writing and exploring the garden, and also see what we have in common. I felt slightly uncomfortable when I first met Chloe because I did not know her and she is older than me. I also felt kind of excited because my buddy seemed fun I was really looking forward to eating all of the plants especially the tomatoes!

11
After we first met, Gia and I were talking with each other and I found out that, just like me, Gia loves to dance and she also said that she really wants to continue dancing when she is older. It was really cool to know that even though Gia and I had never met before this year, we could still have so much in common. I am really looking forward to spending more time with Gia so I can see what else we might have in common .When Chloe and I were talking we found out that we both want to visit a tropical place like Hawaii. I want to visit a tropical place because I really like the beaches. My buddy wants to visit a tropical place because, like me, she likes the beaches and warmth.
Before I started hanging out and talking with my buddy, Gia, I first saw the garden. I was surprised because I didn’t know how far back it went as I have never actually seen it in person before. When I first saw our section of the garden I thought that it was kind of small but now all of the plants have blossomed and the garden is full and beautiful. I saw so many amazing colors when I first went into the garden. The colors that I noticed the most was green, red, and yellow. My first impression of the garden was that it had very green vegetables, pretty flowers, and
12
small bees. I thought the garden felt alive and natural. I noticed many beautiful colors in the garden, especially red and purple.
Since I have been spending time in nature with Gia and I learned many things about her. For example, I know that she loves tomatoes and she said that when she first walked in the garden she was upset because there was kale and she really doesn’t like kale. That’s another thing we have in common, we both dislike kale. My buddy Chloe thinks the dill is the prettiest plant in the garden because she thinks it looks almost like a flower and she is allergic to bees. I also learned that my buddy is fun. I also learned that we both like to go to the beach and swim and I don’t think that my buddy likes tomatoes.
One thing that I have learned about working together with a partner is that even if you don’t know someone at all, you can have a lot more in common that you might think. I had never seen Gia before and the first day I met her I found out so much about her and that was an amazing
13
feeling. I learned that people of different ages can get along really well even though I didn’t think this would work at first. I now think that we work together really well. I really want to work together again so that we can learn more about each other.
Much like seeds travel through the wind and start a new life, Gia and I will be like the seeds as we travel from place to place, landing in a tropical setting that awaits our new life. When we are older, Gia and I are still like the seeds because we want to move to a tropical place and start a new life. Just like plants grow my buddy and I want to grow in how much we love to dance. We both want to grow in our perfection of the gift of dance. When we are older, Chloe and I both want to live somewhere tropical, dance, and have a lot of pets.

Abby and Addy
One morning in November, I walked into my fifth period Language Arts class. I was going to meet a fourth grader in the garden. I was very reluctant and thought that Addy, my buddy, wouldn't work with me. For a few minutes working together was awkward, but not for long. We quickly bonded over experiences in the garden and became closer friends.
When I first met my buddy, it was early November. I walked to the garden with my class. All I knew was that we were going to meet a seventh grader in the garden. I was nervous about meeting someone new. When a got to the garden, it was just our class and were waiting for the seventh graders to arrive. I was waiting with my friends when I first meet my buddy, Abby and it was a little bit awkward. I really didn't want to leave my friends.
15
The two of us share many commonalities. For example, we both enjoy spending time in the garden and think it is cool. When we first meet we both quickly realized that are names are practically the same! My name is Abby and her name is Addy.
When I first saw the garden, it was a mess of color ranging from green to purple. Some plots of land where organized and others were overflowing with food waiting to be harvested. It was a beautiful sight to see, the Pine View community growing food that will not only feed them, but could be used in the cafeteria.
When I first saw the garden it was blooming with colors of green, red, yellow, and purple. I loved the way the colors blended together in the cold crisp air and the plots of land. The plots have a variety of plants in them. I thought that Pine View having a garden was a cool idea, especially since we are using NASA fertilizer.
I gained the knowledge that Addy is a kind, wonderful fourth grader. She showed my kindness when she let me borrow her glue stick. She loves the garden and likes to try new things, like
16
tomatoes. She likes sports, and is a great student.
I learned that my buddy, Abby and I both enjoy plants. I also found out that she is very good at describing things she sees in the garden. I experienced that some plants smelled really bad and that she will try anything, especially lettuce. Finally I saw that even seventh graders have trouble with spelling.
I discovered how to identify kale, with the help of Mrs. Schell and Addy. I experienced the sweet taste of tomatoes right out of the garden. Acquired the knowledge not to eat just anything out of the garden (the hard way).
While working together with my buddy, Abby I gained the knowledge of how to describe colors and use good sensory words. I also learned that lettuce right out of the garden tastes really rich.
One hope that we have for the future, is to have our own gardens and to grow different types of fruits, vegetable, and flowers. We both cannot wait to harvest them! We would like to see
17
to see the photosynthesis process and how the plants grow. We think it would be great.

Odelia and Lexi
It was a bright and sunny day when I first met my seventh grade partner, Odelia, in the earthy environment also known as a garden. I had gone through a lot of preparing to meet my wonderful partner. I was excited, but nervousness lingered in the air. I asked myself questions like: What is my partner doesn’t like me? What if my partner is a lot cooler than me? What if my partner is not nice and is annoying? When I entered the garden and Mrs. Schell called out my name with Odelia’s, I knew that this would be a fun project.
The first time I met my new partner, Odelia Tiutyama, in the garden it was fun and she was very nice and outgoing. I was used to working alone, but with time I understood working with a buddy was a lot better.
19
The first time I met my new partner in crime, Lexi Vega, it was a bright and sunny day with a nice, calm breeze. My partner was taller then me even though there was a two-year difference in age, and I am the older of us! It was so awkward! We finally bonded when I was attacked by parsley and my partner saved me from the plant.
Some commonalities I have with my buddy, Odelia, include enjoying sushi, pandas, listening to all sorts of music, and caring a lot about our families. We both enjoy being on stage and acting in dramas.
My partner and I were both very quiet until we both bonded over our immense hate of vegetables, which was when I realized my partner was not as bad as I thought they would be. My partner and I share many commonalities. We both hate vegetables, enjoy math and drama, and we both have a deep love for sushi. We also bonded over animals and our favorite color being blue.
Some of my first impressions of the garden itself include: the garden was cool as cucumber
20
because there were baby cucumbers everywhere, it smelled a little earthy because of tomatoes which littered the ground everywhere like Easter eggs, and it was very cool to see all the different kinds of plants at different stages. I enjoyed seeing the tomatoes which were small in some plots, but fully grown in other plots.
The sky being blue when I first saw the garden, definitely influenced my thoughts on it. My first impression of the plots littered with tons of plants was that it smelled a lot like rosemary and parsley. The garden also left the impression that it was dangerous because not only was I attacked my parsley, but I was attacked by mosquitos and I almost ate a rotten tomato. This experience was not only fun, but it was a very trying time.
Some of the things I found out about my partner is that she has a wonderful personality and that she is very nice. One day, when we were putting some worksheets into our journal, my buddy, Odelia, was attacked by a parsley plant that was behind her, it caught on her hair
21
and then I helped her escape the plant. Odelia's friend had a bug land in her journal, so she snapped her journal shut causing her to kill the bug. Then Nell, the friend, threw the bug on Odelia, who screamed and flicked the bug off.
I learned many things about my partner from such a lovely environment. My partner was very nice and a little shy, but once you got her out of her little bubble, she was very friendly and positive. My partner was very nice and she saved my life when she saved me from the plant. Unlike most friends, *cough cough Helena,* after she finished laughing, she actually helped get my hair detached from the plant.
One insight I gained from this activity was that over time teamwork pays off. Also, that when you work with a partner you get more done then when you work alone. Something very important that I learned is that your partner has to cooperate in order to get things done.
I gained many insights from this activity of working together and writing together with my partner. I gained the knowledge that when you work with a team, you get things done faster
22
and have fun while doing it. I also learned that sometimes when you are put in awkward situations, you just have to adapt and it might just be something you really enjoy.
One hope both of us share is that we want to become actresses or directors while never getting attacked by parsley again and becoming very good dancers. My friend and I also want to get into Ivy League colleges, I want to go to Harvard and Odelia wants to go to Stanford. When me and my partner are college graduates we both want to travel the world, we especially want to go to Europe so we can put the cherry on the sundae of life.

Adrian and Carlos
Meeting someone new was very exciting. I liked to know that I could get out of the classroom and discover a new place, the garden. Carlos and I didn’t know each other at all. We didn’t really know what to talk about and it was kind of awkward at first. When we first opened up and talked about sports and what we would like to be when we grow up, things started to be a lot better. It turned out to be great at the end.
When I first met Carlos, he was a little shy, but really nice. I felt excited about being in the garden, because I was able to make a new friend who is younger than me. I really liked the setting that we were able to meet in because it was very calm and pleasurable. It helped
24
me to meet Carlos because I found out that fourth graders aren’t that bad.
When I first met my buddy, Adrian, I felt shy because I’m not used to introducing myself to bigger and older kids. I’m just used to meeting other people and them introducing to me. After some period of time, I got used to my buddy because he was very nice. It was pretty fun to meet someone new and work with him. He was pretty cool and I had a good feeling about the experience we were about to share.
While we were discovering each other, we came to realize that we both have big dreams for our futures. I would like to be a professional tennis player. That is my dream. I would like to be rich to have a good and healthy life in the future. If I for some reason I don’t achieve my dream, I would like to go to a field in science. I like to play video games, just like my buddy, Carlos.
When I grow up I either want to be an astronomer or a professional soccer player. That is my dream. I would also like to be wealthy and live a far, long life. My buddy and I both like sports and being active. We both have commonalities in the food we like to eat. Finally, we both enjoy
25
playing video games.
I thought of the garden as a great idea. It smelled pungent, sweet with all the different vegetables. It was a great setting where I could be calm and have a good time with my buddy. I really enjoyed being in a fresh atmosphere and focusing on writing a story.
My first impression of the garden was that I thought the setting wouldn’t be very bad. The vegetables smelled, looked, and tasted wonderful. They were great to eat and were the best part about the garden. I liked the smell of the setting and the atmosphere there. It was a pleasure to be with someone new.
In addition, I learned that my buddy, Carlos, likes soccer and wants to be the next Ronaldinho. Carlos works very hard to achieve what he would like to be. He is also interested in science, such as space. Carlos likes to play video games and is shy, but very nice. My buddy is great.
I learned a lot of things about my buddy. For example, I learned about what he wants to be when he grows up. Also, I learned his favorite sport is tennis. He likes to play video games and is
26
an active person. In addition, I learned that he is a nice person.
One insight I gained from this activity is that you can learn a lot about someone pretty quick. Also, I liked to write in the garden because it is very calm and is easier to think because it is more open. I liked the experience with my buddy a lot because I get to learn new things about someone.
I liked working with a seventh greater in the garden. The writing came out easy when you work with somebody older. It was a pretty good experience working with my buddy. An insight that I gained in the garden, was that I felt a lot better in a calm and good-smelling atmosphere. This improved my work with my partner.
My buddy and I dream to be wealthy people in the future. We want to live a long and healthy life. We both want to be sports players in the future. If that doesn’t come true, we want to find a career in science. For example, being an astronomer in hopes of finding new planets. I now know that working in a calm setting makes me finish work quicker.

Ciara and Samantha
I remember the day vividly. I was in fifth period with Mrs. Schell and I received the news that our class would be spending the following couple of week with a fourth grade class. I wasn’t very ecstatic at first about having to do the writing section but I was elated that I would get to work with little people.
When I first met Ciara, I felt excited to meet another student at Pine View and I was also eager to learn about seventh grade. Also, I felt happy that I would be able to work with someone else with the garden project.
My partner, sam, and I both like the color blue, we both go to Pine View, we both like broccoli (even though people don’t like this veggie). We both like to be in the garden and we both like gardening. In addition, we both like the thought of being a marine biologist.
28
The first time I met my buddy, I did not know how well we would connect in personalities. But, after just one meet Sam became one of my favorite fourth graders ever!
We both love the color blue, we both go to PV, we both like gardening, we both want(ed) to be a marine biologist. In addition, we both enjoy taking it easy and relaxing. Not to mention spending quality time in the lovely garden at Pine View.
My first impression of the garden was that the garden had a warm feel to it and the garden appeared to be very lively and fruitful. In addition, the garden was very welcoming to usfourth graders.
My first impression of the garden was that it was so cool that we got the chance to come. Also, I thought the garden was luscious. Lastly, I thought that it was so great that I got the opportunity to participate in the garden because when I was younger I never got the chance to go outside and get my hands dirty.
29
What I have learned about Ciara during these past few weeks is that she is quite the social butterfly, she wants to work in the medical field, and we both sleep any chance we get. In the future I hope to get a PhD and I want to go to college in Florida.
What I learned about my partner, is that she likes to be in the garden and she has an older sister. Also, we both are quite fond of sleeping at any chance we get. Lastly, I feel like we both feel like it was great having to have met each other.

Connor and Elijah
I was thrilled to meet my buddy, Elijha, because he shared many of my interests and much of my personality. He wasn’t too loud and he was a nice person. It was a wonderful experience to meet him. When I first met Connor, I felt happy. I liked him because he was quiet, kind, and calm. It was fun to meet a person that has the same personality as me.
We both like the vegetables in the garden, and we like things like technology, music, and puzzles. Our interest in music is also shown because we both play string instruments. Further, neither of us have much of an interest in sports. However, we like tennis more than golf because we find tennis more action-packed than golf.
31
As soon as I entered the garden, I stepped into a lively box of vivid greens. There were smaller plots for many unique plants within. The iconic smell of the garden flowed through me as I breathed happily. My first impressions of the garden itself were how big the garden was and how large the plants inside were. It was almost as big as my garden at home. There was a plant that had leaves that shared many qualities with rubber. I noticed the rubber-like plants above all because they had an iconic feel, while the other plants just had a normal, leafy feel.
In the garden, I learned that Elijha likes a variety of fruits and vegetables. This was obvious through our interesting conversations. Also, he most likely ate ten tomatoes during his garden visits. During my time in the garden, I learned that Connor liked the kale vegetable and kale chips, because he seemed happy when Mrs. Schell joked about having kale chips after the trip to the garden. He was also scared of there being bugs inside of tomatoes, so he didn’t eat any of them. My person also likes to eat cucumbers, tomatoes, and other fruit.
An insight I gained from working and writing with Elijha in the garden was to not dismiss
32
younger people as unwise. Before knowing who my partner was, I worried that he would goof off the whole time and not help with the assignment. However, even younger people have equally unique and valuable qualities as older people.
An insight I gained from working together and writing together in the garden was that vegetables are good. Having to think critically to write these sentences really helped me learn about my interests in vegetables. You should always eat vegetables, since they are always interesting.
Finally, we have a dream for the future. We both have gardens with neat plants. Since plant-related things are interesting, we want to continue to grow our knowledge of how to maintain our gardens. We hope to sprout up to become people who work with technology.

Moriya and Scotti
I really liked my garden buddy! Her name was Scotti, she was super nice, chill and easy to get along with. We both loathe tomatoes which is a plus! When we were strolling around the garden we studied all the plants, attempting to figure out which ones were which. We loved the gargantuan broccoli plants, and the purple cabbage.
Today I met my garden buddy! I was really shy at first and didn’t say much, and she seemed to be the same way. He name was Moriya! She didn’t say a considerable amount, but her name is Moriya. She appears to be pretty cool and asked me to call her Mo. Today in the garden Mo told me about all the different kinds of plants that existed in the vast plane of vegetables. I loved the purple cabbage because of its colorful hue compared to the other vegetables and it was huge!!!
34
Scotti and I are both tomboys and we both have four other siblings. We never ever wear dresses or skirts because there are way to uncomfortable, shorts are the best for running! Her hair is perfect, it is beautiful platinum blonde hair, and looks super soft. We went over to the tomatoes, there were many little round plumb rogue tomatoes dangling from the vines, to bad I don't love tomatos.
Today in the garden Moriya and I talked about what we had in common. We had almost nothing, we are complete opposites, but we both loved the garden. Moriya has bright amber hair while I have blonde hair, she has a very bubbly and pleasant demeanor, while I am very lax and more serious.
Today I tasted mint leaves with Scotti that Jacob showed me they tasted really sweet, apparently its used in spearmint flavoring which is really cool. Not very much happened in the garden other than writing our entries.
The garden was alluring, I loved the purple cabbage because it was a very deep purple and
35
smelled very earthy. I also tasted mint leaves were seemed to be cold and reminded me of toothpaste. Can’t wait to see my buddy tomorrow to talk to her. I met and talked to her seventh grade friends today. They were, interesting and complete... well weird, but it's ok because I'm weird too. Their names were Jacob and Caleb.
I can't believe Jacob eats tomatoes like they are apples. It's crazy. I am really sad I won't see Scotti again after next week in the garden, also I won't get to skip class. Scotti had to help me with how to write words because I just can't spell, so sad. Can't believe I couldn't spell "belief".
Moriya is really nice and awesome. She has really neat handwriting, and she constantly tried to include me in anything she was doing like talking to her friends, eating tomatoes or mint leaves, and she always smiled. Today Jacob just kept on eating tomatoes... it was strange.
I get to see Scotti one last time after this to create a diary! Super excited. Not much happened today. I know I have learned with one thing! Out of all the spices in the world rosemary is THE WORST! Tasted in the garden, made me gag.
36
Moriya and I want to be friends in the future, it would be cool if that dream happened. We could hang and play some video games! Rosemary is a very interesting herb... don't care for it though.
I totally want to hang out with Scotti in the future, she's super chill and funny. She taught me how to whip. Let's just say I have no skills in coordination... I failed. I know this is the last day I see Scotti but I'll defiantly see her around Pine View, so it won't be to bad not being her buddy anymore. Our dream for the future is to hang out and become better friends. I know this will happen.
Today is one of the last days with my buddy, I cried. Just kidding! I was a little sad but I had a fun time. I will miss adventuring around the garden every week with my buddy tasted strange herbs, and vegetables, but I think we will hang out in the future. I want to see Mo more and be with her more later in the year.

Annette and Hana
We had just taken our Seedfolks test the day before. When I walked into the classroom Mrs. Schell told me to choose a new journal that I was going to share with my fourth grade "garden buddy." I was excited to be doing something new. We all picked out new journals and then we walked to the garden. When we got to the garden we walked around and observed all the plants. When Ms. Williams' class came, Mrs. Schell and Mrs. Williams started assigning us our fourth grade "garden buddies". With everybody getting their garden buddy and me being almost the last person I was getting a bit nervous. When my soon to be new friend and helper came up to me, she did not say hello, she bowed to me. I said Hi and waved nervously. I then asked her what her name was. She answered "Hana, what is your name?" "Annette" I responded. I could tell she was a little nervous too. But once we got passed all our nervousness, we started our work and found
38
out a lot about each other. We soon realized this about each other that we would become friends.
The first day I met Hana, I was a little scared to meet a seventh grader. Soon after the first day in the garden I was glad my partner was somebody so collaborative. I noticed this because she seemed very friendly and outgoing. Also, I found that she had a fear of bees, when she quickly ran away screaming softly. It was so funny!
I have always loved sports. I have played almost every sport you can name. I decided that I have a passion for soccer. So my dream is to be a professional soccer player and play in the World Cup. If this dream does not come true (I hope it does) then I would like to do something pertaining to government. I also have a very strong passion for civics and politics.Ever since I was little I have wanted to work for Google. Another dream I have is working for Buzz Feed. I would like to work for Google because they have great working conditions, and I like to design things and draw. I would like to work for Buzz Feed because the people that work there are
39
always trying new things and their videos always make you laugh. An example of their funny videos is that they tried to tell the difference between Nutella from two different countries.
In the garden I discovered a couple of things about Hana. One thing is that I learned that she is allergic to bees. I learned this because the first day in the garden, I saw a bee and told Hana, she asked me "Where is it?" I said "Right near your head!" She then proceeded to slowly walk away. She then told me tat she was highly allergic to bees. I also learned that she gets sunburned very easily. I discovered this because one day she wore a very thin shirt and kept telling me that she was going to get sunburned because she gets burned easily.
One morning we were in the garden and we had to answer some questions. We didn’t know the answer to one so she just told me that she is French. In the garden I found out that Annette is French. Annette then explained to me that she goes to France every summer for five weeks. I told her that I have always wanted to go to Europe.
I learned what the difference between kale and lettuce was. I went to ask Mrs. Schell and she

told me that it was lettuce so I ate it. But I realized that it tasted nothing like lettuce so I asked her again, and she told me to show her the plant. So I did and Mrs. Schell said "Oh yeah that’s actually kale, sorry." I then asked her to show me a lettuce plant, so then we went on a mini hunt to find one in the garden. Once we did, she showed me what the difference was. So now I can tell the difference between lettuce and kale.
One day in the garden it felt like it was about 100 degrees and the sun was extremely strong. The shirt I was wearing had a large opening in the back. I get sunburned very easily, so I was afraid I was going to get badly burned. I ended up getting just a little sunburn, not too bad. I had a lot of fun in the garden, regardless!
Hana and I have different ideas for the future. I hope to be a professional soccer player, and be the star in the World Cup and in the Olympics. I can already hear the crowd cheering for me! On the other hand, Hana hopes to be a designer for Google, or work for Buzz Feed. One thing we do have in common would be that we both have wanted to create a Google logo, and my
41
interest started when I was very young. Before I was in school I knew I wanted to create art in the form of a Google logo.

Nell and Nemmo
The first time I met my Garden Buddy, Nell McBride, it was a sunny day and the tomatoes were ripe. I was very excited to meet her because I knew this would be a very fun project because we would be able to interact with each other. The first time I met my garden buddy, Nemmo, I was excited to become friends and learn more about him and his future goals and dreams. I wanted to know about his family, his favorite foods and whether he had a garden at home!
When we started talking about our commonalities we learned that we both observed the same things in the movie Butterfly Circus, like that in the 1800s there were many discriminations about people who did not look like everyone else, which means we think alike. Our similarities are that we both want to graduate from Pine View and have very high goals for the future.
43
My first impression of the garden was that it felt very alive because of all the bees buzzing and all the joking around with friends and colorful because of the red tomatoes that were littered everywhere. Compared to other gardens, this one is very unique because of its design. My first impression of the garden was the garden was very beautiful because of all the different stages of growth you could see from the plants and peaceful because there were very relaxing vibes coming from everybody.
I learned that we think alike and that we observed the same things in the garden like all the laughing and bonding from other partners. When I asked my newfound friend wants he wants to do he said that he wants to become a cardiologist, someone who deals with the science behind a heart.
I liked how the elementary school kids think a lot like we do in writing, which will be useful for middle school because we do a lot of writing and knowing how to use metaphors helps with writing. The insight I gained was that the fourth graders and seventh have so much in common.
44
From food to video games we do many things alike.
One hope or dream that we share is that both want to be successful in life, we want to both receive an outstanding education and have friends to help us out along the way. We both want experiences that will make our minds progress and grow. One hope or dream for the future is that we both want to be successful in life and want the best for everyone in the entire world, for example we want to completely stop wars and racism.

Kareena and Sofie
When I found out that we were pairing up with fourth graders for a project, I was a bit skeptical at first. I was just glad to be getting out of the classroom. When I met Sofie, things were pretty awkward and uncomfortable, because we didn’t know what we were doing. But, after we talked for a while and got to know each other, things got easier. We talked about sports, which we are both interested in, and our families. Since my sister is in the same grade as Sofie, I got some insight on what fourth grade is like now.
The first time I met Sofie, I saw how shy she was. I made it my goal to get to know her, so I started talking to her. After only ten minutes, I felt that we had been friends for years. I was really excited for this opportunity to work with fourth graders to experience fourth grade through someone else’s mind.

The first time I met my garden buddy, Kareena, we were in Mrs. Schell’s classroom. Things were a bit awkward, but after we talked for a while, we became much more comfortable with each other. I was glad to be working with seventh graders to see how they think and how they act.
Some commonalities we share are that we both enjoy sports. We like sports because of the competition. We also like sports because of the teamwork, which is probably why we work so well together.
My first impression of the garden was that it was very fragrant. All of the herbs and plants mixed together to form a nice smell. Getting out colorful all of the plants were. The bright green lettuce and the vibrant red tomatoes made me feel very welcomed in the garden. I was glad that I would get to spend time there with Kareena.
I learned that putting different plants in the same area makes a difference on the effect of the garden. I felt really close to Sophie during our time in the garden. I felt that the lack of technology made it so we were able to connect on a personal level in the garden.
47
I learned many different names of plants I haven’t heard before. Another thing I learned is how observing the plants from a different direction with my buddy, Kareena makes a difference because you get to see the different aspects of each plant. I also loved eating the tomatoes because they were fresh from a garden.
I learned how I acted and behaved in fourth grade and how different I have become. I wondered what Sophie will be like when she is in seventh grade. Sophie also thought of different ways to think about ideas that I would never be able to think of.
One insight I gained from working and writing in the garden with my buddy, Kareena is that it is different working with a seventh grader, but in a good way. I got to ask her questions and see what seventh grade is like. I felt that we both gave each other good ideas and ways to improve.
One dream we share is to become famous athletes in soccer and tennis. We both hope to be very successful and accomplished athletes with wonderful families. We both hope to be
48
Olympic gold medalists. Although we enjoy different sport, we both can agree that we hope to be athletes who will be remembered for a long time to come.

Caleb, Jacob, and Simon
When I picked Simon as my buddy, I was excited and curious how this experience would turn out to be. Simon and I knew each other before the project from a summer camp, but we still had fun describing our hobbies and what we enjoy to each other.
The next time we met at the garden, we found out that we would have another partner named Jacob, we were surprised about having another partner, but it made me even more excited about the garden project because it would be an even more interesting experience.
I was happy when Caleb picked me as a partner, I was excited because I was friends with Caleb in a summer camp before the garden project. The next time we met in the garden,
