“Israel can you please stop talking back there you’re distracting the rest of the class.” Said Israel’s teacher. “Mr. I can’t stop talking if I don’t entertain this class then who will? Not you.” Responded Israel. The whole classroom started to laugh. See Israel tends gets into all sorts of trouble at home and at school.

At home Israel gets in trouble for many things such as not doing his chores, talking back to his mother and staying up late playing video games without permission. It seems Israel can’t stay out of trouble no matter how much he tries, partly because he also enjoys it and has a really smart mouth.

Israel has been getting called to the principal’s office from the first day he started school and his mother certainly had enough of that.
Israel’s mother Jasmine tried many things to get Israel to behave at home and school and nothing ever seemed to work. She tried grounding him, taking away his television time, taking away his video games, not letting him go outside to play.

Jasmine had mentioned the problems she was going through with Israel to her coworker named Ashley and that’s where she got a great idea. Ashley explained to her how she would get her own son to stop misbehaving when they would go out or when he was at school or at home.
She revealed her secret to Jasmine, “Take away Christmas gifts.” At first Jasmine thought no way that’s too drastic, I can’t do that to my baby but she gave it some thought. Israel wasn’t making things easier for her as he kept getting into trouble at school and she decided she had no choice but to give this Christmas thing a try.

As Israel is getting ready for school late in November a month away from Christmas his mother Jasmine sits him down and says “You know Israel we have to do something about you always getting in trouble and I think I know what.”
Israel gave his mom a blank stare because he didn’t know what she was up to “What are you talking about mom?” Jasmine responds to Israel by saying “Well this year I’m going to try something different with you, either you behave at home and in school or next month you won’t receive any Christmas presents from me or anyone in the family.”

“Mom are you kidding me that’s not fair you can’t do this to me. I don’t ask to get into trouble things just happen mom.” Israel was outraged and couldn’t believe he was about to not get any Christmas presents this year.

The next day while Israel is in school everyone in his classroom is talking and joking around and Israel is focused on his school work trying to not misbehave. Johnny who was a fellow class clown turns to Israel and says “Hey Izzy, what’s up no jokes today why are you so quiet?”
Izzy was a nickname given to Israel by his classmates. He responds by saying “No, no more jokes from me until after Christmas.” “What’s going on?” asked Johnny. Israel told him look my mom said if I kept misbehaving in school I wasn’t going to get any presents next month so I have to behave so I can get my gifts.”

As the days went by things got a little easier for Israel he wasn’t distracted anymore in class and had stopped clowning around. He thought this one going to be a piece of cake and he got too confident and one day while answering a question in class made a joke that got him in trouble. “Who knows the answer to this question?” ask Ms. Smith “Who doesn’t only a dumb person doesn’t know the answer.”
The class burst into laughter and although Israel didn’t mean to make that into a joke that’s exactly what it was taken as. “Israel you know where to go see you later.” Israel couldn’t believe he just got sent to the principal’s office “Ms. Smith I wasn’t trying to make a joke I’m sorry don’t send me to Mr. Donaldson’s office.” Israel pleaded with his teacher but she wasn’t having that. “No sorry now just go” responded Ms. Smith.

As Israel walked to the principal’s office he had lost all hope for Christmas because he knew his mom wasn’t going to understand that he wasn’t trying to be funny. “Come in and take a seat Israel” said Mr. Donaldson. “What did you do this time?” Israel sat there upset and said “Mr. Donaldson I didn’t do anything this time I promise it was just a little misunderstanding.”
Mr. Donaldson looked at Israel smirked and said “Tell me what happen son I’m very understanding.” Israel explained to Mr. Donaldson what had happen in class and also explained to him what his mother told him about getting in trouble and no Christmas. Mr. Donaldson thought maybe the teacher over reacted a little bit because Israel was always in trouble for cracking jokes.

Mr. Donaldson saw this as a great opportunity for him and Israel. “Okay Israel I see I believe you didn’t do it on purpose so I have a deal for you. What would you say if I tell you I can keep you out of trouble if you do me a favor?” Israel didn’t like this one bit but anything he could do to stay out of trouble was worth a try. “What favor would I have to do Mr. Donaldson?”
Mr. Donaldson on top of being the school principal was also the basketball coach for the school’s 8th graders so he made Israel a deal he couldn’t refuse. “Look I’ll make sure you stay out of trouble for the rest of the school year if you come and start practicing with the basketball team and helping out by giving the guys water, Gatorade and towels. What do you say?”

Israel didn’t really like this idea but he didn’t mind because he knew he would stay out of trouble and also he would be able to play basketball. "Fine I’ll do it, anything to stay out of trouble.”

As Israel kept practicing with the team Mr. Donaldson started to realize that Israel was actually a great player and had the talent to make the team even though he was only a 5th grader. “Hey Israel did you know you were this good playing basketball?” asked Mr. Donaldson.
Israel smiled and replied “I’m good at most of the things I do that’s why I was the class clown.” Mr. Donaldson laughed and offered Israel a starting position on the team. Israel couldn’t believe it but he was super excited for the opportunity. “Yes Mr. Donaldson I would love to play for the team.”

Israel became the only 5th grader in the city to play with the 8th graders but he was just that good. Now things were going great for Israel staying out of trouble and playing basketball for the school’s team. Israel quickly made a name for himself on the basketball court by scoring 30 points in his first game.
