My focus for the first two weeks was getting to know how to do my job. Firstly, I remembered the map of the hotel. There are three levels in the main building, with a tower and an Annex building, and many other facilities such as kitchen and underground parking. I know the most shortcut way to get to workplace. Then I learned how to fill the housekeeping cart to make my work more efficient. And I learned from my manager and supervisor how to make the bed and clean the bathroom, which are the basic skills of a housekeeper.

In the photo on page 5, which was taken from my workplace. I have just finished the clean of the bedroom. As there are usually two housekeepers clean one room, one clean the bathroom while another make the beds. Then we will switch the job in the next room. In this bedroom, I started from taking the used sheet and pillowcases into laundry bag. Then I make the bed with clean sheet and pillowcases. The soft pillows should be put in front of feather pillows with a pillow card. After that I dust the table, the drawer and the bedside table. Then I refilled the supply. At last I did the vacuum. After checking with my team mate, we have make sure that everything has been done and we continue to the next room.

My goal and focus for the next week is to improve my working efficiency. I am trying to manage my way of working to a quicker and better direction. As most of my colleagues are experienced housekeepers, my cleaning progress is usually fall behind my working partner. They sometimes need to help me after they have done their part. I am keeping learning from them of how to make the bed in a high standard (as shown in the picture), how to clean the bathroom well and fast and how to do the housekeeping without careless omission.

During week 3 and week 4, I have learned more customer service skills. Although the housekeepers are not the front line staffs that are directly facing the customers, we sometimes need offer services to customers, which reminded me that I must learn customer service skills. For example, last Thursday, when I was doing housekeeping, I was ask about the tourism information of Victoria and Butchart Gardens, teach the gusts how to make coffee with hotel’s coffee machine, and lead the way to lunch restaurant. As it was the first time that I face-to-face service the gusts, I was a little bit nervous and might not explain very clearly. After that, I started to learn customer service skills form the front desk staffs and bar attendants. I will try to use these skills in practice in following weeks.

The job that I have really done well is that I have proficiency housekeeper. I can keep up with my working partner, with both quality and quantity guaranteed. I sometimes can help my partner after I had finished my part. On the first two weeks, I always spend too much time on double checking and meaningless deep cleaning, because of unskilled working skills and lack of confidence on my working. However, I have overcome these two problems. I have meet the goal that I set up two weeks ago and become a qualified housekeeper.

During the internship in the hotel, I found that many things that I learned from courses are very useful. Some knowledge that I remembered by memorize mechanically was understand actually. By leaning the structure of lodging industry of the textbook, I link it with the structure of Comfort Inn and understand the organization chart of the hotel. I also put the theory of many departments, especially housekeeping, the front desk, maintenance and F&B service, with my real experience in the hotel. I used the knowledge of housekeeping responsibilities, safety training, schedule, and laundry operations that I learned from the class into real practice. It helps me a lot in my work.

Something I am doing really well this week is to teach new staffs. As the high season is coming, the hotel is hiring more and more staffs, so does the housekeeping department. During my co-work time with these new colleagues, I pass on the skills and techniques which I have learned to them, just as my supervisor and colleagues taught me. I think teaching others is a good way of consolidate knowledge and promote experience. I can adopt my good points and solve my shortcomings during this process. I can tell them the mistakes that I made and not only let them not make the same mistakes, but also keep in mind myself.

Something I am concerned about is that with the increasing number of guests, I might not have enough time to adequately communicate with other departments’ staffs. As my manager and colleagues told me that the high season will be in July and August. During my busiest working days, I could be too tired to talk with others. So the first thing I should do is to sleep and eat well, to have a health body foundation. Then I should reasonably schedule my appointments with other staffs that I want to communicate with. And I also need to make flexible working time table every day to avoid overlord. I can also ask my manager to help me with my plan.

During my internship, I have learned a lot from it. And also I have left and will leave some something to the workplace. I am an optimistic and humorous person, so I am trying to make the working environment more active and positive. And from my culture background, I am better know what Asian gusts want from the service of the hotel. So I can make suggestions to the hotel of how to attract more international guests. During my working, I have summarized several housekeeping skills. With the exchange with my colleagues, some of them have been found while some have not. We can learn from the good points and offset the shortcomings.

My main focus for this week is that I am doing the Annex Building all by myself. Annex is an independent building of the hotel. It is similar to the style of motel. I only worked with Judith (the fastest housekeeper) in Annex once before. As there are not many rooms in Annex this week, I must finish them alone. It is a little challenge to me. Because I had used to the team work. With my partner, we can urge each other and supervise each other. However, while working alone, I must keep an eye on both cleaning and inspection. It requires me of working diligently and carefully. I shall improve my working skills to a new level.

During this week, a group of swimming team which from middle school stay in the hotel. The boys and girls are staying in the main building while some teachers are staying in Annex. The room has a kitchen so the teachers make lunch there. As Annex has a roomy lobby inside, the students have lunch there everyday. So, beside housekeeping skills, the skill I have used and developed most this week is communication. I ask the teacher what they need before they cook and deal with garbage and recycles after lunch. There are usually 3 large bags of garbage and one full basket of recycle everyday. It is also a test to my physical power. The teachers are very kind and friendly. I like to help them.
