     The Coahuiltecan was a Native American Tribe that 

lived in South Central Texas. It was very hard to live there 

considering the harsh climates and desert-like 

surroundings. But they managed to live there and adapt in 

some very bizarre ways. Sadly, though, not much was known 

about the Coahuitecans because they merged into the 

Spanish society. But for the stuff we do know, I'll be here 

to tell you all about it. So READ ON!

     The Coahuiltecans were a group of Native 

American Tribe who used to control the land at 

Northeast Mexico and South-Central Texas. They used 

different types of tools to complete different tasks. 

Examples of the tools are stone hammers & stone knives 

(to build), bow & arrow (to hunt), and woven baskets 

(to store food). Now, those information looks normal; 

but there are some pretty interesting things that you 

might not know about the Coahuiltecans. And some of 

the interesting things just might scare you.

But if you read on, you will understand why 

they had to do what they did. And who knows, 

maybe the Coahuiltecans will be the most 

interesting Native American Tribe you've heard 

of.

     The Coahuiltecans lived in South-Central Texas. If 

you look at the map on the right, it indicated where the 

Coahulitecans were located. As you can see, it was a 

pretty big area, mostly because they roamed around a 

whole lot while chasing animals such as buffaloes or 

deer. The reason for chasing the animals is that since it 

was hard for them to look for food where they lived, 

they had to chase the animals when they have the 

chance (you'll learn why in the next page).

      Besides hunting buffaloes and deer, the 

Coahuiltecans also fished and gathered wild

plants. But since those were also scarce, and 

they had to go to different places within the 

highlighted area on the map.

     On a normal day, the Coahulitecan Tribe usually 

travel to a place where they can hunt (buffaloes, deer, 

etc.). But sometimes, they already got to an ideal place, 

so they would just start rebuilding their houses.

     On celebrations (sometimes in occasion of a religious 

occasion, victory in battle, or plentiful harvest), they 

would celebrate far into the night until they grew 

too tired to continue. These parties 

are called mitotes.

The houses (or huts) that the 

Coahuiltecans were made from 

deerskin draped over bent 

branches. Permanent housing 

weren't made because they 

had to move around a lot. 

Inside the huts, there is fire for 

heating & cooking and either a 

grass or a deerskin bed. The 

houses were a formation that 

looks like a "U" and there were 

two offset houses. In total, 

there were 15 huts (most of 

the times)
