Story 1: Black Bart
3
With sweat on my back, I went on, with the grime and lice in my beard I went on, with the dirt in my trousers I kept on going. I was making my way to the gold country, the wild west, good old California. My brothers and I kept each other going, pushing each other to the limits. Staking our claims, only to find no gold. Eventually, my brothers passed on, leaving me behind. California’s gold rush was no more, and I was heading back east. Back to my family, my homeland. Shortly afterward I joined the army and marched under General Sherman’s command, mile after mile, year after year.

After hearing about the Montana gold rush I set out, for a new life, on foot. Marching with general Sherman taught me a thing or two. Once I got there I staked my claim. I was a placer miner once again. Shortly after, big companies such as Wells Fargo came to town. They were buying up all the other miners’ claims, but not mine, not yet.

“Hello sir, what can I do for ya?” I said. It was Wells Fargo, they came shotgun in hand. “Hello, we would like to buy this here claim.” “No thank you, it’s not for sale,” I said. “Been finding much gold?” “No, but It’ll turn up as soon as the water rises.” “But what if it doesn't.” Later that month while I was panning all of a sudden the water stopped. It forced me off my claim. I knew it was the Fargo brothers, so I set out for revenge. Soon I became one of the biggest outlaws of the west, Black Bart.

Chapter 1: government and crime
Living on the frontier was tough. It was especially tough if you lived in a small or new town. A small or new town usually didn't have a sheriff, and you would be lucky to have a local vigilante. A vigilante was the most common source of order. Towns needed a vigilante because not many people were brave enough to step up and be sheriff. One of the first and main political frontier governments was the territorial governments. Territorial governments were there to protect people's properties. This was very important for people to have because without it, squatters would be taking land from others and there would be chaos throughout the town.

The town criminals were mostly squatters or people that would take other people's crops. the main punishments for these minor offences were the prison and sometimes death. All the big criminals were the gangs, the stagecoach robbers, and the horse burglars. One of the most famous stagecoach robbers was Black Bart. Black Bart went to California, after finding no gold and both brothers passing away, he went east. Black Bart blamed himself for his two brothers deaths since it was his idea to go to California. Black Bart heard about the Montana Gold Rush and set up a claim there. Big companies like Wells Fargo were buying up all the land, They bought all the claims around Bart’s. Then they offered to buy his and after refusing they cut off his water supply forcing him off his claim. After his little incident with Wells Fargo, he decided to become a stagecoach robber. Soon Black Bart became one of the biggest outlaws in all of history.
