Baseball
Today, baseball is a very popular sport in America, however, it was not started in America. In England, a game very similar to baseball was played around the 1600's. Baseball did not come to America until about 1845.
How many years ago from this year (2016) did baseball first begin in America?
Use a model or diagram to show your work.

Baseball Positions
There are many positions in baseball, which are labeled on the field. The pitcher is the player who throws the ball to the person who is batting (positioned near the catcher). The distance between each base is about 90 feet. If the runner on third base is running towards home and is 30 feet away from home, but the first baseman is running towards home and is 60 feet away from first base, who will get to home plate first if they are running the exact same speed? Explain and use the diagram to answer.

Baseball Teams
Baseball teams are made up of many players. Not every player on the team gets to play at the same time, however. There are 9 player spots on the field, which means there will be only 9 players from each team on the field at once. There are 9 players on the field from one team, and a player from the other team goes up to bat. Now there is a total number of 10 players on the field. How many equal groups can be made using all of the players (10)? Is this an odd or equal number? How do you know? Draw a model and explain.

Attend to precision
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Students are solving a one step subtraction word problem. Students need to find the missing date in the story in order to set up the problem. Students are also asked to use a model or diagram to show their work, which will be a representation of 2016- 1845.
