Main Characters (Pages 1-2)
Lucy is a solitude person. In the text, it says that she likes to be alone and that she seems to "have powers" to make herself invisible.
"Maybe it was the earbuds he always seemed to be wearing, or the fact that she'd never seen him talking to anyone before; maybe it was the way he slipped in and out of the building so quickly, or the faraway look in his eye when she spotted him across the subway platform." (Pg 3) The author characterizes Owen as an anti-social type of person

Setting (Page 3)
There were multiple settings, as the two traveled around the world in opposite directions. The main setting is in Manhatten, NY. This establishes the mood by setting it as clear and magical in the night when they were together, and hot and humid when the night ended and
they separated.

Plot Diagram - Exposition (Page 4)
This story starts off when two teenagers, Owen and Lucy, get stuck in an elevator together when the power goes out. The two talk briefly until maintenance gets them out. They then explore the dark city and end up on the roof of their apartment complex gazing at the stars. They joke about the phrase: "Wish you were here," that's usually put onto a postcard. Once the power comes back on, Lucy ends up moving to a different country and Owen eventually moves out to the West.

One day, when Owen was out with his dad in New York, they arrived at a gift shop and went inside. Nothing caught their eye, until Owen spotted a postcard that says, "Wish you were here". He buys the postcard and sends it to Lucy's apartment (This was before she moved; the day after the power outage). Shortly after, Owen's dad loses his job at the building and they start travelling to the West, with Owen sending postcards to Lucy's new house in Edinburgh, and Lucy writing him emails.

Owen continues to send postcards as he travels, until he settles down in Lake Tahoe and meets someone. Meanwhile, Lucy met someone too. They lose touch for a while until Owen and his dad are on the move to Seattle, and Lucy is heading there for a wedding. They meet again, only to have a huge blowout in response to each other meeting someone, and stop talking again.
Plot Diagram - Climax (Page 6)
Unable to take it anymore, Owen and Lucy break it off with their SOs and Lucy sends him a postcard from her dream destination, Paris. Since they haven't been in touch, she doesn't know where Owen is at the moment, so she sends it to his childhood home, in Pennsylvania. That ignites the flame again and they become back in touch and agree to meet back in New York. Only problem? Lucy's family decided not to go back to NY this year and Owen doesn't have any money to get there. They find a way though.
Plot Diagram - Falling Action (Page 7)
They both get there a day early and Owen starts planning out the day they are going to spend together. They both end up back at the roof of the apartment complex they lived in the day before and end up spending the evening together.
Plot Diagram - Resolution (Page 8)
Lucy and Owen can't promise that there will be a happily ever after, but they promise to meet again soon and they maintain a sort of long distance relationship.
Figurative Language (Page 9)
Imagery: Page 144
"But out here, on the edge of this great blue lake, it fell thickly and steadily, blanketing the world in white and muffling everything it touched".
This quote describes the winter Owen spent in Lake Tahoe when his dad was searching for jobs. It describes the snow, falling in Lake Tahoe. The author chose to use imagery at this moment to describe the beauty of the winter there.
