This children's book is dedicated to Mr. Smalley's 4th block class.

Hello kids! My name is Delano the donkey. Most of you might know me as Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I just got my nickname because I was a Democrat whose symbol is a donkey.I was born on January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York. My parents' names were James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt. Both were born into wealthy families. They both had major impacts on my character. I did suffer with polio but I did not let that stop me from succeeding in life.
Introduction
I was the United States 32nd president from 1933-1945. I was a strong leader, good speaker, cautious ,caring, thoughtful, and hard working. I also thought it was the government's responsibility to provide economic security, decent housing, medical care and social security.
Introduction
Chapter One: The 1st New Deal
Before I was the president, Herbert Hoover was in office. During his time, the Great Depression occured. The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939 in the United States. It was a major economic downfall. In the United States the Great Depression began after the stock market crash on October 1929, which made Wall Street panic and wiped out millions of investors. Herbert Hoover didn't get the job done. I needed to rescue America.
Let me show you how it's done because you clearly aren't doing something right.
During my "First 100 days" I immediately started working on the New Deal. The New Deal was the set of federal programs I made up after taking office in response to the the Great Depression, and it lasted until America entered the Second World War in 1942. It had four major goals and achievements which were economic recovery, civic uplift, job creation, and investment in public works.
Chapter 1
Don't worry about it guys. I have it all under control.
I was a creative President. I had ideas such as Fireside Chats which were an influential series of radio broadcasts where I utilized the media to present my programs and ideas directly to the public so I could strengthen the relationship between the government and the American people. I also came up with Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) with the responsibility to insure bank deposits in eligible banks against loss in the event of a bank failure and to regulate certain banking practices.
Chapter 1
I didn't just care about the economy. I created the National Industrial Recovery Act(NRA) to “encourage national industrial recovery, to foster fair competition, and to provide for the construction of certain useful public works, and for other purposes”. A branch of this was the Public Works Administration (PWA) to build up our nation's beauty and keep it safe include projects related to highways, buildings, natural resource conservation, energy, flood control, housing, and more.
Chapter 1
The Tennessee Valley Authority was my favorite. It built dams up and down the river system for flood control and power generation. It also helped malaria prevention, reforestation, forest fire suppression, erosion control, fertilizer development, agricultural education, and wildlife habitat protection. I consider myself the hippy of all of the presidents because of how much I'm connected to nature and that's why TVA was my favorite program.
Chapter 1
Animals...You benefit from TVA too!
Even though I rescued America, there were still haters who opposed the New Deal. The New Deal was opposed by businessmen and the Republican party. They did not want government interference in people's lives. It was also opposed by some in my own party who felt that it wasn't strong enough and did not provide enough assistance. Huey Long was my biggest hater. He didn't think I was doing enough for people in poverty. His idea was called "Share Our Wealth". Within Louisiana, Huey basically ran the state. Opponents were suitably dealt with, local elections were fixed and the police were bribed. But when it came to the courts, I filled them with people I knew so I would benefit.
Chapter 2
It felt like everyone was playing the blame game.
