Want to try it?
I guess ...
Emily was a very sad person. One day, she was talking to her best friend, Carla. Emily said, "How are you so happy all the time?" and she said, "I have a little secret. Want to try it?" She handed Emily a packet full of something that looked like sugar. Emily knew she shouldn't take it but she was so desperate she tried it anyway.
Emily took the 'brown sugar' (heroin) home to try it. That afternoon, when her parents were gone, she called her friend over to help her. "So how do you use this?" She asked. "Well," her friend replied. "You put it down on the table, then sniff it up like this!" Emily watched as her friend inhaled the white powder. "Oh, okay, thanks." Her friend left. Emily tried what she said, and soon enough she was blissfully happy. She could hardly think, but that was nothing compared to the carefree feeling she felt inside.

can't ...
think...
clearly ...

The next week, Emily tried to concentrate on her homework, but she kept craving heroin. She couldn't stop herself. So, she opened her mom's medicine drawer. Both of her parents worked as doctors, so they had all sorts of supplies. She grabbed a syringe, inserted some heroin, and injected herself. Immediately, she felt happy again. She completely forgot to finish her homework. Later that night, she felt nauseated, her breathing was low, her heart rate was slow, and she was drowsy. She felt bad, but then she realized she could just take some more heroin, and she would be fine.

The next day at school, Emily's teachers were very mad that she hadn't done her work. So, her math teacher made her come to the board and answer a question in front of the class. Emily was usually a stellar math student, but today her thoughts were cloudy. She finally just guessed the number four, but her speech was so slurred that the teacher couldn't understand her. She couldn't think clearly, and she was itching like crazy. All she wanted at the moment was some heroin. Her teacher noticed that Emily was feeling bad, and sent her to the nurse.

Um... Emily you've been quiet today, what's the answer?
Are you doing okay, Emily?
Emily went to the nurse, who asked her what was wrong. Emily tried to say she was fine, but again, her speech was so slurred that the nurse couldn't understand her. Emily started to feel sick. "Why don't you call your mom to take you home, okay?" The nurse said. Emily nodded and opened up her bag to get out her cell phone. Syringes and a packet of heroin rolled out. The nurse gasped. "You're taking heroin?!" Emily looked confused. "You know, tar, smack .... whatever you kids are calling it these days." Emily nodded slowly. Her secret was out.
