This book is dedicated to my teacher, Ms. Zimmerman

Here I was in the middle of Antarctica, in a small cabin trying to go to sleep. I was lying on the top bed of a bunk bed with my friend snoring away under me. A window was right above me. I looked out into the horizon. Wavy colors were floating in the sky. It was called aurora borealis. It looked like they were saying hi to me. I waved back. I couldn't go to sleep because I was so excited for the day ahead!

A local animal rescue center had asked me and my friend to find a new species in Antarctica. We, of course, needed some help. So, we invited a close friend of mine, and also a very famous ecologist, Lauren. I carefully got out of bed and went to my desk. It was so cold. The whole desk was made out of metal so it was really cold when I touched the desk.

The whole desk was made out of metal so it was really cold when I touched the desk. The heat from my body went inside the coldness of the metal handle, which makes the handle warmer. This is called conduction. I opened a drawer and got out the maps. I wanted to plan everything now and get a move on. But, everyone was sleeping. “Why are you up, Hayley” asked Lauren. “ It's way too early in the morning”. CRASH! BOOM! “OW!” I whipped my head around and gasped. Then I started laughing.

“What's so funny?” asked a very sleepy Chloe. Chloe was my best friend. She had blond hair, while I had black. We both like and love the same things. Except one thing. I was an early bird, while she wakes up super late. “Come on. Get your bag ready! We have to get going. You know we have only a week's time to find a new species in this super cold area” informed Lauren. “Do we have to?” whined Chloe. “Chloe caught canaries crying” I said to lighten up the mood. Chloe had two pet canaries.

We all cracked up. “Eat some food and let's get going” instructed Lauren. “The tundra is the coldest of all places. Don’t forget to bundle up” I said, staring at the T-shirt and jeans, and sandals huddling around Chloe. “What's the tundra?” asked Chloe. “The tundra is the coldest biome on earth. The other biomes are: tropical rainforest, grasslands, taiga, ocean, desert, and temperate forest.” I explained. Chloe said she got it and went to change. Then Lauren and me took turns changing.

O… M… G! It was so cold outside. It was so windy, it was like someone put a hair dryer on high and it was in a freezer the whole time. We started walking upwards toward a snowy hill so we could see where we were supposed to go. “We’re supposed to go right” Chloe screamed over the wind. We saw some plants ahead, so we tried to trek over their. There are only a few plant types that grow there. There are no trees here. But then, out of the blue, A blizzard came. “Look, some shelter” I yelled over all this wind. We all rushed to the very small shelter. “Let's make a fire” whispered Chloe.

We collected dry twigs and made a fire. “ If we use wet twigs, we won’t be able to make a fire.” Lauren informed us. I peeked outside after some time, and saw the
blizzard has cleared. We all took our things and rushed outside. With all of the snow piled up, it was very hard to find our way around. “Hello” squeaked a tiny voice. We all looked down.

Their was the cutest little bunny sitting their. It was completely white and had a lot of fur to keep it warm and cozy. “What's your name” I asked. “Snow Angel. But you can call me Angel” she said. We introduced ourselves. “Oh no! Its getting dark. We better go.” worried Lauren. “O.K.. Which way do we go Chloe?” I asked. “I don’t have the maps” she admitted. We didn’t have the maps, so we don’t know which way to go. That means only one thing.
