To Jocelyn:
I am so proud of you as a student and reader! Keep up the good work and always continue to read!

It was the middle of summer break on a hot, humid, sunny day when two girls decided to go play outside. Liz and Kim were sisters who loved to ride bicycles. Kim was the older sister who was very athletic and always tried out for different sports teams. Liz, the younger sister, aspired to be a veterinarian when she grew up.
The girls’ mother had just gotten them bicycles at the beginning of summer for doing such an outstanding job on their report cards. After eating pancakes and bacon for breakfast one morning the girls said goodbye to their mother and set out on their adventure.

The park behind their house was full of different trails to go on and they loved exploring around that area because Liz always saw different animals in the woods. Liz decided for that trip she would pack her camera in her backpack so she could take pictures of all the different deer, birds, and other animals they would see.
Kim and Liz rode their bikes through the windy paths, dodging tree branches that were hanging low, and speeding over tree roots that stuck up from the ground. They kept a steady speed as they raced through the woods.
“Slow down!” Liz would always scream at Kim as she raced like a NASCAR driver down the path.

When it was around noon, they decided to stop for a quick picnic Kim had packed them. The girls got off their bikes and rested them against a tree in the shade. “What did you pack us for lunch?” asked Liz.
“I made your favorite, chicken salad sandwiches and sour cream and onion chips”, responded Kim.
“Oh yum”, replied Liz as her stomach growled.

They were happily eating their lunches when they heard a faint noise in the distance. Kim and Liz looked at each other with a puzzled look on their faces. “Deer don’t make that noise” explained Liz.
“And neither does a bird,” said Kim. They quietly got up from the ground and made their way closer to the noise. Without too much movement or sound they walked quickly towards the noise as it got louder and louder. The bushes began to rustle and shake in front of them. With panic and fear on their faces not knowing what was in the bushes, a small brown puppy came bounding out of the bushes.

“OH MY!” screamed Liz at the top of her lungs as she lost her balance and fell onto the ground before she noticed it was just a puppy. The girls began to laugh as the puppy came leaping into their laps.

“You should have seen your face, Liz” cried Kim.
Trying to catch her breath Liz said, “I did not know what it was!”
The girls calmed down from laughing and began to realize that there was no one else around them that this puppy belonged too.
“I think this little guy is lost,” said Liz.
