Charlie was a horse on a southernfarm, where his master Henry
grew cotton and kept 10 slaves.
2

But Charlie's peaceful life ended abruptly
when Henry was drafted to the
Confederate Army. 1861
3
Henry rode Charlie into Atlanta, where they found out that the
Confederates had already gained
Ft. Sumter in Virginia.
4
Charlie went riding to Virginia with the group from Atlanta. As soon as they
joined with a rank, Union soldiers attacked.

5
Charlie could see that his side was losing. But suddenly, a general named Jackson
came in with reinforcements.

6
That night, the troop celebrated in the BullRun Victory and toasted "Stonewall"
Jackson. There, Charlie heard his master
Henry say, "I’ll fight to my death to keep
my money-making slaves!"

7

Charlie was shocked by Henry's reason for fighting. He decided to leave the
Confederates; he wanted nothing to do
with human enslavement.
8
After running all night, Charlie saw a newspaper on a Virginia-town street.
New General for UnionGeorge McClellan has taken over the Union army. As
a major contributor to the
Anaconda plan, McClellan
plans to compensate for
another Union's loss
at The Second Bull Run.July 1861
9

The Anaconda Plan will ruinHenry's cotton crop and the
Cotton Diplomacy of the
South! They'll have to put up
an embargo...
10

Charlie stayed in the town, unnoticed, until August, when a group of Union men
passed through.
11
The men were shouting about taking Southern property under the Confiscation
Acts. Interested, Charlie followed them.

12
Charlie stayed with the men who tried toenforce the Confiscation Acts. One man,
David, had practically become his new
master. Charlie was content with the
anti-slavery views of the northerners.

13
One day Charlie was wandering by himself in the woods and he saw the
Union army. Upon seeing Charlie, a
soldier grabbed him.

14
Before he knew it, he was in the middle of a battle: the Second Bull Run.

15
The Union soldiers had been completely surrounded by the Confederates. That
night the soldiers did not celebrate, they
nursed their wounded and buried the dead.

16
But the next day they were moving again, this time to Antietam.

17
They arrived to the battle of Antietam in September of 1862. Charlie was already
tired of the war.

18

A woman, Clara Barton, was seen running on
the field giving aid to wounded men. Charlie
heard men begging for the “angel of the
battlefield” to come and save them.

19

Even thought the Union won the battle, McClellan had to be replaced. Burnside
became the new Union General.
20

By November of 1862, the Union army had moved to the next battle; the battle
of Fredericksburg.

21
While the Union army was waiting to attack, the new General Lee for the
Confederacy had time to evacuate
Fredericksburg and get reinforcements.

22
Charlie couldn't stand to dodge anymorebullets, so he trotted into town and found
another newspaper.
December 1862New Acts for AmericaHomestead: public land grants for small farmers
Pacific Railway: federal
aid for construction of a
transcontinental railroad
23
Back at the Union camp, the only thing the soldiers were excited about was
Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation."

24
By January, the army was in the same place as before. The only
changes were the addition of General
Hooker and the completion of
Lincoln's Proclamation.
25
For the beginning of 1863, Charlie spent a lot of time in the nearest town. Then one
day, Charlie saw his old master David.

26
David explained that the Conscription Act called for more soldiers and that the
Inequitable Draft Laws brought them to
the war.

27
Charlie was more willing to follow the Union army with his old friend David.

28
Before Charlie realized it, he was againin the middle of a battle, the Battle of
Chancellorsville.

29
At the end of the battle, Charlie tried to find David, but could not find him. Later,
when all of the men had returned to
camp Charlie overheard that David was
a prisoner of war.

30
Once Charlie found out this news he knew that he had to get David back some
way or another.

31
The next morning, the troops began marching to Vicksburg, Mississippi.
During this voyage, Charlie only thought
was rescuing David.

32
Charlie hoped that the same Confederaterank that took David would be at the
battle, and therefore he could find him.

33
When the men entered Vicksburg, one man stumbled across a newspaper.
The title was, "Consequences from the
Suspensions of the Writs of
Habeas Corpus."

34
During the battle in Vicksburg, Charlie moved to a different rank and became
under Grant's control in hopes of finding
David. But he never did.

35
Finally in early July (still during theVicksburg battle), Charlie saw David.
He darted across the battle field and kicked
down the guards watching David.
