What is the Solar System?

The solar system is the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun with the forms of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. It consists of eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Mercury

Mercury is the first planet of the solar system. It's one of the inner planets alongside Venus, Earth and Mars. It's orbit is about 88 days, which is less than any other planet. Mercury is often resembles the moon based on its cratered features. Mercury is 58 million kilometers from the Sun.

Venus

Venus is the second planet of the solar system. It is the second of the inner planets. Venus takes 224.7 days to orbit around the Sun. It has the longest rotating period of 243 days and it rotates different than the other planets in the Solar System. Venus is 108 million kilometers from the Sun.

Earth

The Earth is the third planet in the solar system. It's the only planet that humans and animals live in. Earth orbits 365.25 days around the Sun. Earth is 150 million kilometers from the Sun. It has one moon. Earth is made up of 77% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 2% of other gases.

Mars

Mars is the fourth planet of the solar system and is the last of the inner planets. Mars is 228 million kilometers from the Sun. It is known for its reddish-orange appearance. Mars orbits around the Sun for 687 days (1.9 years). Mars has two moons, which are named Deimos and Phobos. Mars is even named after the Roman god of war, Ares.
