This book is dedicated to Dr. Seuss and Abraham Lincoln

Every African American in the U.S. liked Civil Rights a lot...

But the former Confederates,
who lived in the Southern US,
did NOT!

The South hated Civil Rights! And the whole fight!
No one knew why they thought it was not alright.
Though Lincoln offered them pardons and citizenship in the 10% Plan,
the thought of offering freedom to the African Americans was one the South couldn't stand!

Radical Republicans disagreed with Lincoln and thought that the Reconstruction of the South should be tight.
The Wade Davis Bill said the South should free slaves and give African Americans rights.
This idea made the South sick!
The South thought this can't happen quick!

After the war ended, Congress passed the Freedman's Bureau to help the newly emancipated slaves.
"I rather see them dead in graves,"
the South said, "then to see them be successful and free!"
Congress had to disagree!

Suddenly Lincoln died,
but the South never cried!
Johnson was one of their own,
so now that he was president they weren't going to moan!

Congress ratified the 13th amendment and now the slaves were free!
This certainly wasn't something the South ever thought they would see!

But then the South had a thought,
they would make rules to keep the African Americans from being able to have a shot!
The Black Codes and sharecropping were unfair,
and it filled the African Americans with despair.

Johnson, on the South's behalf, vetoed the Civil Rights Act,
but Congress fought back and made a pact,
that they would get the Act ratified.
So Congress made an amendment that affected people countrywide,
they made the Civil Rights Act constitutional!

"Let's divide the South into districts and make them pass the amendments!"
Johnson vetoed the act and exclaimed, "That will take away the South's independence!"
But Johnson was overruled,
and the South felt ridiculed.

Then Congress had an idea! They would play a trick,
and it would make Johnson sick.
They passed the Tenure of Office Act,
so when Johnson wanted to fire Stanton, he was almost sacked!

"Election time is coming!" the South then snarled with a sneer.
The South exclaimed, "We Must stop the African Americans from voting here!"
