It has been a crazy day today. Pop has been home for the past
couple of weeks. I think my parents lost their business. All
businesses owned by people like us are being shut down by the
German soldiers. I don’t get it. Julian says that the Germans
believe that we are not capable of owning a prosperous business.
I don’t agree. They call us savages. They think we can’t do
anything, but I have to disagree. Ma and Pop are so great. And I
feel bad that they have to struggle through this time. I hope
things get better soon. Julian doesn’t think so, but I will continue
to pray to God every night in hope for change.

I haven’t gone to school in five days. We aren’t allowed. First, I
was so happy! No tests. No homework. No teachers. But it is
pretty boring around here. With Pop out of work and our food
dwindling down to nothing, we are all losing our minds! I hope I get
some food in me quick!

Something is wrong. Ma and Pop are packing.
They say we are going to Ms. Jane’s for a mini
vacation, but I don’t think it is a true vacation like
the one we once took to the lake. Ma says that Ms.
Jane has four cats and that I can help take care of
them. I guess that will be fun. We once had a cat, but it
ran away after a couple of months. Pop said we couldn’t
afford to feed it any longer. Even though home isn’t really
good right now, it is still home, and I don’t want to leave. Ma
says I can’t even say goodbye to Juliann because we are leaving
tonight. Life can’t get any more hectic!

I have not written in a while, but that is because I forgot to
bring my journal. Ma ended up screaming at me! I don’t get why
she was so mad. It is my journal, not hers that I forgot. So, now I
must write all of my feelings on these pieces of scrap paper.
I’ve heard rumors that the soldiers are going to come
and take us to camps. I went to camp one summer. My
parents made me. At first, I didn’t want to go, but I ended
up loving it there. I met so many people, and we played lots of
games. These camps are not like that though. People say that
the people that go there never come back. I don’t know what they
do there. No one really knows. But I do not want to go. Please God,
don’t let them come get me.
